WEST PLAINS - The Mineral Area Cardinals had never won a game against West Plains on the Grizzlies' floor in the 12 year's of West Plain's existence, and they had to really work hard and long for their first time. The Cardinals outlasted the Grizzlies in a marathon quadruple overtime, 114-112.

Several players had already fouled out of the game when the last free throw was sank by Willie Hassell to give the Cardinals a two-point lead with five seconds left in the game. The free throw was the end to a three-point play by Hassell to put the Cardinals ahead for the last time.

The Cardinals took the early lead, but a 15-4 run put West Plains up by eight, which would be their largest lead of the game. Mineral Area would go on their own scoring run to tie the game at 29 and would continue until they led 40-31 at the half with the aid of 10 points by Curtis Muse. West Plains relied on Ronald White who scored 20 of his game-high 39 points in the first half.

The Cardinals would go up by 13 midway in the second half, but a West Plains surge made it only six with seven minutes left in regulation. The Grizzlies would tie the game at 66 and the shoot-out began which would add 20 extra minutes onto the original scheduled 40.

West Plains called in their sharpshooter Ryan Boyd in the second half, and Boyd scored his first points by hitting three threes in a row. The Grizzlies made five three-pointers in the half, the last one tied the game in regulation 71-71.

The Cardinals would jump to the early lead in all three of the first overtimes, but each time the Grizzlies would come back to tie the game again, 82-82 after the first and 95-95 after the second. Daryl Butterfield stepped up to the line in the first overtime, the free-throw line, that is. Butterfield sank four free throws in a row in the final minute which kept West Plains from taking the lead.

By hitting two three pointers to start the third overtime, the Cardinals were able to jump out to a five-point lead, but the Grizzlies came back to tie the game at 104 apiece. Tony Webb scored three three-pointers in the overtime periods.

For the most part the fourth overtime was a free-throw shooting contest as players on both teams had a hard time defending because of game weariness. Hassell and Webb accounted for all of the Cardinals points in the last frame with five points each.
