FARMINGTON - The Fredericktown Lady Cats needed only one more win to make the coveted trip to the Class 4 state championships in Columbia this next weekend, but standing in their way Saturday night was the Lutheran South Lady Lancers. Lutheran South used their speed and a hot hand from beyond the arc to hand the Lady Cats a 71-39 loss.

The Lady Lancers (23-5) made 11 three-pointers in the game, and Fredericktown had no answer for Brianna Frigerio, who made seven of those threes, scoring 37 points in the process.

Frigerio started her onslaught with a steal, taking it all the way for a lay-up, and then added her first three to give the Lady Lancers a 7-0 lead. Fredericktown only got off two shots in the first three minutes of the game, and Fredericktown coach Lonnie Sheldon called time to settle his team down.

Betsy Royer answered the bell with the Lady Cats' first points, a lay-up off of an offensive board. Kemp would dish the ball to Royer underneath for two more baskets and Royer would go on to score eight of Fredericktown's 10 points in the first quarter.

The Lady Cats were plagued with loose ballhandling as they turned the ball over nine times in the first quarter, the same amount of turnovers the Lady Lancers had all game. The turnovers kept the Lady Lancers on offense most of the quarter and they were able to work the ball to set up Frigerio and Michelle McQueen for a three-pointer apiece.

The Lady Cats made amends for their early turnovers, committing only four in the last three quarters.

Lutheran South shut down Royer's scoring in the second quarter, and it became a one-girl show as Frigerio hit three more threes in a row and scored 16 of the team's 20 points in the quarter.

Johnna Tinnin gave Fredericktown's only answer in the quarter with a drive to the basket for a conventional three, and the Lady Cats' chances of a trip to state slipped away quickly.

Fredericktown's chances at a comeback in the second half was met with even a hotter hand from the floor by the Lady Lancers.

Lutheran South's shooting percentage from the floor went from 52 percent in the first half to 62 percent in the second half, even though for the most part Frigerio was quiet in the third quarter. Courtney Lauer picked up the slack with a pair of twos and a pair of threes in the quarter.

After Lauer's second three, Fredericktown called time as their offense stalled. Amy Hendrix found the mark from beyond the circle with a three to get it restarted. Kemp, who had been quieted in the first half with a couple of fouls, added a basket and Tinnin made her second of the game.

Royer was doing her best on defense with two blocked shots and a pair of boards, but on offense the Lady Cats could not get the ball to her, and the 6' senior got her only points of the quarter with a three-pointer from on top just before the buzzer.

Tinnin, a sophomore stepped up for the Lady Cats with 10 points on the night, scoring five in the fourth quarter alone. Royer led the Lady Cats with 13 points and nine rebounds.

Rebounding and free throw shooting were virtually even for both teams. The Lady Cats pulled down 22 rebounds with 10 on offense, and made 7-10 from the line. Lutheran South had 23 boards, nine on offense, and was 8-11 from the line.

The main difference came down to the shooting percentage with Lutheran South going 26-46 from the floor and ending up with 57 percent, and Fredericktown was 15-45 for 33 percent. The Lady Lancers made 11-20 three-pointers for 55 percent from outside the arc. Frederickwon was 2-6.

Fredericktown ends their season with a highly respectable 22-5 record. Lutheran South will play Ozark (23-6) in the Class 4 semi-final game on Friday.
