Dragons remain undefeated, pick up first conference win

STE. GENEVIEVE - The Ste. Genevieve Dragons racked up eight runs in the sixth inning in their conference-opening game against the Fredericktown Blackcats. The Dragons only held a 2-1 edge, but Ste. Genevieve came through with several big hits late in the game for a convincing 10-1 win.

The Dragons had the bases loaded in the sixth inning when Brad Schweigert crushed a three-RBI double. Schweigert's double was just one of five hits in the frame and one of three doubles during the inning.

Ste. Genevieve's Zac Bauer and Vince Wolk were both 2-4 with a double. Tanner Wolk went 2-4, and Jake Donze was 2-2 with a double. Taylor Huck chipped in a double and Jake Greminger came through with a single. Tanner Wolk got the win. He threw six innings, struck out five, walked two, gave up seven hits and no earned runs.

Logan Stevens, David Penwell, Matt Smallen, Matt Tinnin, and Jake Sikes all had a single for the Blackcats.

Ste. Genevieve, now 3-0 and 1-0 large-school MAAA, will travel to Central for another conference game today. Fredericktown (2-1, 0-1 in conference play) will host Farmington the same day.

Arcadia Valley 6, Greenville 2

IRONTON - The Arcadia Valley Tigers extended their winning streak to three games with a 6-2 win over Greenville. Both teams were tied 2-2 in the sixth inning, but the Tigers connected big hit after big hit to put up four tallies.

The two squads matched a run in the second frame, but Arcadia Valley's Jake Yarbrough recorded a RBI sacrifice fly in the third inning for a 2-1 game. Greenville tied the game up in the top of the sixth, but that would be their last run. Nick Benz kicked off the frame with a single, then Luch Laird and Derek Wilson blasted back-to-back triples. After Tyler Laird singled, Ryan Esselman crushed a double.

Esselman, Luch Laird, Nick Benz, and Derek Wilson were all 2-3. Tyler Laird added a single for the Tigers. Wilson got the win for Arcadia Valley. He went the distance, scattered six hits, struck out nine batters, walked two, and gave up only one earned run.

The Tigers, now 4-1, will try to extend their winning streak to four games today when they host conference foe Valley.

GOLF

Central 162, Herculaneum 202

HERCULANEUM - Although the Central Rebels played on a golf course they weren't too familiar with, they still managed to shoot 40 strokes better than the hosting Herculaneum Blackcats. Central recorded six birdies in a 162-202 victory on Union Hills golf course.

Central's Will McDowell finished the round of golf with a couple of birdies and a score of 38 to take home medalist honors. Justin Bower and Blake Stevens both posted a round of 41 with a birdie, and Preston Pinson shot a 42 including a couple of birdies. Even though Tory Marler's score wasn't added to the team's total, he still had a good showing with a 45. Herculaneum's Brandon Sides was the low scorer of his team as he finished with a round of 46.

The Rebels, now 2-1, will host Potosi for a conference match-up today.

St. Vincent 172, Valle 181, Crystal City 191

STE. GENEVIEVE - The hosting Valle Warriors were involved in a tri-match which involved the St. Vincent Indians and the Crystal City Hornets. St. Vincent won the entire match with a combined score of 172, Valle finished in second with a 181, and the Hornets posted a round of 191.

Kolby Armbruster was the low scorer for the Warriors with a 42, and Brad Uding completed the round with a score of 45. Brad Sexauer and Dan Rozier shot 46 and 48 respectively. Crystal City's Nick Schafer posted a 41, and Zach Richardet took home medalist honors for the Indians with a round of 40.

Valle, now 3-2, will travel to conference foe Arcadia Valley today.

Jackson 157, Farmington 163

JACKSON - Although the Farmington Knights were not on their home course, they managed to keep up with Jackson during Monday's golf match. However, Jackson triumphed 157-163.

Farmington's Matt Rhodes claimed medalist honors with a one-over-par score of 36. Rhodes birdied on the par 3, No. 6 hole. Brian Gallagher shot a 39, and Gene Williams and Mitch Reidt both had a round of 44. Josh Whever and Kirk Balsman both ended the day with a 38 for Jackson.

The Knights (2-3) will host conference opponent North County today.
