Three Rivers 5, Mineral Area 4 (8 inn.)

POPLAR BLUFF - The Mineral Area Cardinals split a doubleheader with the Three Rivers Raiders on Saturday, winning the first 6-2 and dropping the second in overtime 5-4.

Michael Hardin picked up the win for the Cardinals, throwing all seven innings and giving up only two runs on six hits and three walks.

Tony Spencer had a big game at the plate and was involved in every inning of scoring by the Cardinals. Spencer scored MAC's first run with a lead-off single that was rewarded with an RBI single by Sean Bard in the first inning. Spencer drove in Seth Kimrey in the second inning with a double.

The Cardinals exploded in the fifth inning to virtually put the game away. Spencer was hit by a pitch to start things rolling. Mineral Area had RBI singles by Brandon Crook, Kimrey and Aaron Miller in the inning.

The Cardinals had to fight back in the second game to get a chance at sweeping the doubleheader. Going into the seventh inning down 4-2, the Cardinals rallied to tie up the score and held on until Three Rivers scored the winning run in the bottom of the eighth.

Mineral Area didn't get on the board until the third inning when Anthony Patton led off with a walk. Spencer doubled and after Crook walked to load the bases Stahl lifted a fly ball to the outfield to bring Patton home and give Mineral Area the early lead.

Cardinal pitcher Luke Holland kept the Raiders from scoring with three scoreless innings to start the game.

Mineral Area received a gift in the fourth inning. Joaby Sikes singled, stole second and was able to score after two wild pitches advanced him 90 feet each time. After Three Rivers took the lead in the bottom of the sixth, both Bard and Stahl came through in the seventh with RBI singles to accomplish the tie.

The Cardinals played two more games on Sunday against Maple Woods in Kansas City, losing the first 6-5 and winning the second 8-5. The 6-5 loss was the eighth one-run loss by the Cardinals, who are 7-19 on the year.

Mineral Area will host St. Charles this afternoon at 1 p.m. in a doubleheader.
