Lady Cardinals nearly perfect on day two of tournament

PARK HILLS - The Mineral Area Lady Cardinals, after having gone 2-1 in matches on Friday, ran the gamut on Saturday to end up tied for the tournament lead at 5-1, but the tiebreaker (head-to-head) left them in second place. (Mineral Area lost to first-place NW Shoals in their first match on Friday.)
On Saturday, the Lady Cardinals started out on the wrong foot, dropping a 25-30 game to Shawnee which had also finished Friday with a 2-1 mark, but from there the Lady Cardinals came back to win the Shawnee match 30-13, 15-9.
MAC finished up the day with two wins playing back-to back by defeating State Fair 30-20, 24-30, 15-10, and then Lindenwood Black 30-28, 36-34.
“They're (Lady Cardinals) not getting down, which is good for the start of the season,” cited Coach Tim Copeland of his team's early strengths. “When Lindenwood fought back from being five points down (in the last game), they could have got down on themselves and folded, but they didn't.”
The Lady Cardinals were very aggressive at the net during the day, setting double blocks and pounding down kill after kill for points. Monica Jarozsewicz led the way with 27 over the three games, Jennifer Gabrian had 24, Lora Dickey rang up 20 and Andrea Lucas had 17.
Angie Clewis had 24 kills over the two days, but what made her two-day total significant was she had no hitting errors for the entire tournament.
Also impressive was the backcourt play of the Lady Cardinals. Libero player Mandy Bieser more than once hit the floor hard in making a dig to keep the ball in play. Bieser made 24 digs as did Ana Markovic, and Gabrian and Lucas both had 23 each.
Overall, Coach Copeland was pleased with the Lady Cardinals early season performance. “They worked hard together. They fought back after losing early, and they're communicating well. That's all good to have at the start of the year,” said Copeland.
