Author helps students with writing
An award-winning author and poet will be visiting the Trojan Intermediate School in February to put on a writing workshop for students.
Judy Young is author of ‘R is for Rhyme, A Poetry Alphabet' which was a 2006 recipient of the National parenting Publications Awards Honor Award. She will discuss the writing process with students.
Young has conducted writing workshops for youths nationwide and is a frequent speaker for teacher organizations and professional education conferences.
In addition, she will be available to the public for a “Meet the Author” Family Night at the school at 6 p.m. Feb. 8.
Ste. Genevieve
City puts ordinances online
The City of Ste. Genevieve now has its code of ordinances online at the city's Web site. Searches of material can be done by code number, or via a search engine that is provided. The code book was recently updated by Sullivan Publications. The city's Web site is www.stegenevieve.org.
Vigil today for Dennis Heberlie
A vigil will be held for Dennis P. Heberlie III today from 10 a.m. until noon across from the Ste. Genevieve City Hall. Today marks what would have been Heberlie's 49th birthday. Heberlie was shot and killed during a struggle in November of 2005 by a Ste. Genevieve police officer.
Family members claimed that Heberlie was mental ill and was unarmed at the time of the shooting. However, Missouri Attorney General Jay Nixon decided not to file criminal charges against the police officer.

Paper celebrates 70th anniversary
The newspaper in Iron County is celebrating their 70th anniversary the same year Iron County is celebrating their 150th anniversary.
The Mountain Echo has served the area since 1937. Hershall Hardy, a principal at Annapolis School, started the newspaper as a one-sheet newsletter.
To commemorate the anniversary, staff designed a new masthead to proudly reflect that anniversary. The newspaper now has a circulation of about 3,000.
Iron County's sesquicentennial anniversary falls on Feb. 17. A committee has been formed to commemorate that occasion.
The Arcadia Valley Chamber of Commerce is recognizing the anniversary at their chamber banquet Feb. 17 at Arcadia Valley Elks Lodge 2330 in Pilot Knob. Those who attend are encouraged to dress in period clothing to kick of the celebration of the anniversary.

Hospital's CEO resigns
Dennis E. Nehls has resigned as the new Iron County Hospital's first chief executive officer.
Ray Freeman will serve as interim CEO until a permanent person is named. He has worked at hospitals in Doniphan, Poplar Bluff and Bonne Terre.
The hospital opened last month.

Sale of electric utility on April ballot
The Fredericktown City Council passed a motion to place a proposition on the April ballot regarding the sale of their electric utility to Black River Electric Co-op (BREC).
Aldermen voted unanimously to place the proposition on the ballot. The city is planning a public forum on the issue.
Library Spring program
Ozark Regional Library will begin their Spring Preschool Story Time Feb. 12. the regional children's librarian will visit local libraries, providing fun stories, games, activities, crafts and many more things for pre-school-age children.
Programs will be held weekly at 1 p.m. on Thursdays at the Fredericktown Public Library. Children must be accompanied by an adult.
