The Oaks Terrace Apartments held an open house on Sunday, September 9, 2007. The new Housing and Urban Development  (HUD) apartments are located at 111 Spruce St. in Fredericktown, next door to the Fredericktown Senior Center.

Ms. Merriweather and Bill Hart provided a tour of the modern facility which includes the latest fire prevention equipment and fire alarms, indoor trash disposal, two Internet capable computers in the multi-purpose room, and three exercise machines. Computer classes are in the works for the near future, including how to e-mail or do genealogy (family tree) searches over the Internet.

The 18 apartments are all new, very clean one bedroom units with door spy-holes for added security and Braille language on the room identification panel. The entrance is also secured by a passcode system providing additional security for seniors.

In addition, two of the apartments have been designed for  easy wheelchair access with wider doorways. Sinks and bathroom facilities have been built at a lower level for easier access. There is also an emergency cord built in the  two uniquely designed apartments to alert onsite management should emergency services be needed.

This facility has a very large kitchen area/recreation room with all the equipment needed for cooking and entertaining whenever guests are visiting. It also doubles as a multi-purpose game room with a view of the furnished outdoor patio. Social activities will be offered as part of the services. The apartments are also cable ready.

An indoor laundry room is available as well as indoor mailboxes. All outdoor grounds maintenance taken care of for the residents. (No snow shoveling or grass cutting). Access is located on the ground floor (no stairs needed) and offers one parking space per unit. Additional storage is located just across the street for at additional cost.

Applications are now being accepted. The apartments meet HUD requirements by allowing anyone 62 and older to apply. Rent is based on a sliding scale and designed to be affordable for low income seniors.
