PERRYVILLE, Mo. - Saturday afternoon marked Homecoming battle for the Perryville football team, but the visiting Fredericktown sideline did much of the celebrating.

The host Pirates were expected to present the toughest test to date for the unbeaten Blackcats (6-0), but instead were blanked by the Fredericktown defense for the second consecutive year in a 35-0 rout.

Seniors Ryan Sawyer and David Penwell continued their steady production as a rushing tandem for the Blackcats behind another strong performance from the offensive line.

Sawyer reached triple digits on the ground for the sixth straight game, covering 153 yards on 22 carries with three touchdowns. Sawyer also turned a short screen pass from Nathan Wilkerson into an 85-yard touchdown to help Fredericktown build a 21-0 halftime lead.

Penwell rushed 12 times for 81 yards, and tight end Mike Crowell added a pair of receptions on third down to extend drives. Wilkerson finished an efficient 5-of-6 passing for 132 yards and two scores.

Fredericktown forced the lone turnover of the game on the second play from scrimmage. Orrin Hawkins stripped the football while chasing down tailback Kris Cottner, and Joey Lewandowski recovered at the Pirates’ 43.

The Blackcats then carried the momentum throughout the first half, scoring touchdowns on each of their first three drives. Penwell burst through the right side for a 32-yard jaunt, leading to a 7-yard scoring run by Sawyer.

Sawyer netted his second touchdown on a 20-yard scamper with 57 seconds remaining in the opening quarter. Wilkerson scored the two-point conversion on a bootleg to make it 14-0.

Perryville (3-3) put together two sustained drives with the aid of five defensive penalties in the first half, but were stifled each time on fourth down. A 17-play march ended at the Fredericktown 10 when Hawkins sacked quarterback Josh Perreault.

A holding penalty prevented a long run by Sawyer on the ensuing snap, but Perryville failed to cover him moments later on a throw-back screen, and a key block from tackle Rodney Stewart opened the left sideline for a 85-yard strike.

A short punt in the third quarter allowed Fredericktown to begin its next scoring drive at the Perryville 24. Penwell absorbed a hard hit and lunged across the goal line an 8-yard pass, increasing the margin to 28-0.

Fredericktown marched 97 yards in 13 plays to punctuate the win, as Sawyer exploded past the secondary on a 41-yard touchdown run with 6:46 left. The Blackcats converted a fourth down at their own 26 to maintain possession.

Cottner was the focal point of the Perryville attack, tallying 104 hard-earned yards on 19 carries. He also landed two punts inside the Fredericktown 5. Waylon Sparkman made seven tackles and batted down a pass on defense.

Perreault completed 8-of-19 passes for 48 yards, and added 31 yards on the ground. Cottner made five receptions for the Pirates.

Junior linebacker Nick Franks compiled a team-high nine tackles for Fredericktown, which hosts Charleston on Friday night.

Lol!! To central, it didn't matter if they had won by 1 or 30....we weren't favored so any win was huge. But good luck Blackcats. We'll be there rooting you on as you play New Madrid. Congrats on winning districts....you're a good team with stand-up kids. Now we can't wait for basketball ;)

i just hope Fredericktown decides to go for two after every touchdown. why shouldn't they?

Central Fan you didnt "Smoke" Fredericktown. You won by 2 points. Look at us we only beat North County by 2 points. Fredericktown has done a great job this year and I hope they do good in playoffs. FarmingtonFan why are you commenting on a Fredericktown and Perryville sight? I am shure if Fredericktown came and played us it would be one heck of a game! GOOD LUCK FREDERICKTOWN IN PLAY-OFFS

Thanks AL MAC Central was a tough team this year! You guys did great! Crowell was having a "Off" night last night with his kicking. I think we should have kicked the ball instead of trying to run it in all those times. We could have least tried to kick it a few more times than we did. The first kick he missed but we could have tried it again maybe with a better outcome. Good luck next year Central and see ya in Districts.

I know your excited Central Fan but we won by two in the last minute of the game. Sawyer ran all over us with 228 on the ground and 50+ recieving. Probably the best back Ive ever seen. Fred'town does need to work on their Kicking game though, badly. You cant win those close games with no kicking. I saw Charleston make it to the championship in '97 and lost to MICDS by 1 point after missing 7 pats. Dont take this the wrong way but Im glad to see Sawyer and Penwell graduating this year, they are pretty much as one blackcat fan put it all but unstoppable. Good luck to Fred'town in the playoffs, this Central fan will be cheering for you. See ya in districts next year.

I hardly consider a 2 point win a smoke, sounds like maybe you were the one doing the smoking. But anyway good job Central and GO FREDERICKTOWN!!!

33-31. Game winning touchdown scored with less than two minutes to play. fredericktown missed four extra point attempts. Defined smoked. Good game Central

I want you to play a team like festus in that type of conditions, Baker had a bad day, 3 int. We are a passing team Festus was a running game. Class 3, if your so good why don't you come play us??

I agree totufftotap, Farmingtonfan its pretty sad when you have to make up rude comments to make yourself look good. I'm pretty shure Fredericktown is 9-0 Farmington is 8-1 and we have played some pretty tuff teams (ste. Gen, Potosi) Yeah you might be a bigger school with more talent but we are a smaller school with greater talent
Blackcat fan posted on Wednesday, October 31st, 2007 at 9:15 pm
ok farmington fan who do u want them to play? cape central? desoto? windsor? they beat 2 very good teams 2 weeks in a row. both potosi and ste gen have the talent to do very good in the playoffs if they could put it all together. when fredericktown goes to the playoffs they will obviously play teams their own level. thats why its called the class 3 state playoffs. go back to comforting the farmington boys.
totufftotap posted on Wednesday, October 31st, 2007 at 11:56 am
To Farmington fan go look around @ class 3 stats and tell me just who is on our level. And its won not one.
Farmington Fan posted on Wednesday, October 31st, 2007 at 9:44 am
the only reason they one is because they play teams on their own level, when they get to the playoffs they will be shut down

to old fan, new fan, black dad, and every one else that has time to type just say congratulations and turn your computer off. The more you type the worse you get. No one has crowned them state champs, just district champs. GIVE CREDIT WHERE CREDIT IS DO!!! These boys play their hearts out for themselves and our town. Be proud of what they have done and show your support. Thank you Harper

Ok people I can't hold it no more! Yes the Blackcats are undefeated and I am VERY happy, I have been a fan forever! But were any of you all around in 1980? That team was also undefeated. Can anyone guess what happened in the playoffs? The Ftown Blackcats got their buttes handed to them by a bigger, faster and better team called the Country Day Rams. I dont want to rain on anyones parade but let's keep this thing in perspective shall we? In case anyone is wondering what is my point, my point is no matter how good you are there is always someone better. So let's enjoy what we've got and stop putting so much pressure on these kids. Who cares if they win state, they are our boys and no matter what we are proud of them.

To FredericktownDAD: We don't need negative *fans* like you in Fredericktown. Especially when those boys are playing their hearts out. I sure hope they don't find out who your son is, especially if he's playing high school football with these boys soon. He may be taught a lesson or 2 in loyalty that he can bring home to you. If you're so quick to criticize your hometown boys. Move to Ste. Gen.

Just want to say I am glad to see Fredericktown doing well this year. It is nice to see the town pull together and fill the stands again on Friday nights. The coaching staff is doing a great job and the players are pulling together and making a great team. GO CATS! Keep up the great work!

As a parent of a Fredricktown Jr. High player I have to say we came out with the win friday but we honestly didnt deserve it. St. Gen was coached well better and was no doubt a better team however they made to many errors and our team capitalized on them. Look at that however you want but I would say without the turnover this would have been a totaly different game. The stats show that they had more yards rushing that us they just also turned the ball over.

What a difference a year can make. A healthy Ryan Sawyer and a change in direction with a new Coach can give a program the needed lift it needs to get on a winning track. The TEAM effort is amazing. Offense and Defense all contribute, as well as, Special Teams. Lets not forget the scores of several of Fredericktown games could have been alot higher had the coach chose not to have some practice time for the Scout Team. The football team has rallied behind their coaches and what a thrill it is to see something different at this years games. Who will stop them. Eight teams have tried and all have failed. There needs to be no trash talking of other teams. Fredericktown has to keep up the good work and let the chips fall where they may. Go Cats!!

You say you arnt mouthing but when you "toweaktotap" says St. Gen better come ready to play 4qtrs that in fact is taunting otherwise known as mouthing. Im From Bonne Terre and have no relation to anyone who is playing in this district however do have some friends from St. Gen, Central, And Fredricktown and this is how I see this District turning out. Week One winners will be St. Gen and Central. Week two winners will Be Central and Potosi. And week Three winners will be Central and St. Gen. I am not saying this to be negative towards Fredricktown I am just saying I have watched all Four teams play and Central has my vote do to their teams size, strength, discipline, and how physical and tuff they play. The only game Central lost they deserved to lose. They had 9 turnovers and thats a fact.
totufftotap posted on Thursday, October 18th, 2007 at 9:55 pm
I think everyone needs to remember this is a message board, not the football field. Last time I checked the Fredericktown football team had nothing to do with who they played so lets leave the scheduling out of this. Second of all trash talking envolves mouthing, not facts. Facts are all that these Cats are trying to point out. I played at Fredericktown in the late 90's and I personnaly would like to see the true MAC confrence but that is just not going to happen. With the exception of Farmington, I think the original 6 or 7 schools should still be the confrence and i think alot of people would agree with that. No school can help who it plays, and no one player is winning these games. Fred has had 5 shutouts and their scout team was in the game in the 4th. Give credit where credit is do and leave the mouthing to fans in the stands on Friday night. And as for S.G. come to play for 4QTRS
LadycatFan#9 posted on Wednesday, October 17th, 2007 at 11:17 pm
Well all i can say is that you all can start trash talking Fredericktown AFTER the games. I dont know bout you, but intimidation doesnt work for our team. We are strong and we are coming out on the top. Just you wait and see. GO Blackcats. 7-0. Thanks!!!
Football Fan posted on Wednesday, October 17th, 2007 at 10:50 am
There is no need to ask the Perryville,Herky,Scott City, or Charleston players the only players that are going to need to be asked about Fredricktown is those of St. Gen,Potosi, and Central. All I can say is yea you guys are having a good season but you can't be going into these next three weeks as cocky as you are or your dreams will be shot down. And as for you saying the other teams thinking you guys are a big push over well no one said that, they just said your cocky and this will make any of these three teams that BEAT feeling realy good. You guys can never count out St. Gen, or Potosi after week 7 and as for Central you cant count them out this year. I dont know if you listen to the radio on friday nights after the game but all you hear is how Central is the most physical and dominate football team in our district. In week 10 we will see who has held up to their high talk and who hasn't.

Well, I don't know what to say except j_lew_33 was just stating the facts (feel free to look them up on stltoday.com). So, it's NOT trash talking, he's just giving those unbelievers the FACTS. He's not the ONLY one who's positive - POSITIVE that Fredericktown has an AWESOME team with AWESOME coaches. Go ahead, under-estimate them. Victory will be THAT much sweeter for them. I don't know how far they will go beyond district play, but I've seen several local hs teams that are in the same conference/district with F'town, and there is just no comparison. This is their year. When your team plays the 'Cats, you'll know what I'm talking about. Ask the Perryville players....Herky players.......Scott City players......Charleston players........ You get the picture.

You cant say sawyer or penwell is unstoppable, central proved they could stop one of the best and that was Cottner. Sawyer and penwell are just another running back. Any running back halfway good should be able to run over a 2a team.
