Editor’s Note: On Sept. 8 a paranormal group investigated alleged supernatural phenomena at various locations in Potosi. In addition to the Missouri Paranormal Research (MPR), a Daily Journal reporter along with the newspaper’s information technology manager participated in the investigation. The following is the third article of a three-part series that deals with the investigation.
POTOSI — Sounds of unexplainable footsteps and falling books prompted the Mine Au Breton Historical Society to contact Missouri Paranormal Research to investigate alleged supernatural activity at the Long-Banta House.
The house, originally built in the 1860s, is now taken care of by the local historical society. Tours of the home are now offered by the group. Several group members feel the home is haunted by the spirit of James Long.
“The house is furnished pretty much with original furniture from the Long family,” said Jerry Sansegraw, president of the Mine Au Breton Historical Society. “Five of them died here of natural causes over the years. One of our historical society members has said that when she walked through a room, it sounded like someone was behind her dropping a bunch of books. She said it happened to her twice. This past summer I was in here and I heard the same sound. At the time I didn’t know Kathryn had heard this same type of racket. It was only after I had experienced the noise that I learned what Kathryn had also heard .”
Joanne Elsey, a member of the Mine Au Breton Historical Society, said while she has not had any paranormal experiences inside the Long-Banta House, one of her friends has had strange events happen to her.
“Whenever she would enter the back kitchen door, she would hear an extremely loud noise,” Elsey said. “It was so loud, it scared her. This happened on several occasions.”
Elsey said the Mine Au Breton Historical Society invited MPR to investigate the Long-Banta House because they want to find out if there is a ghost inside the home.
“There are living descendants of the Long family that are also very interested,” Elsey said.
According to information provided by the Mine au Breton Historical Society, James Long purchased the property which the Long-Banta House sits on in 1865. The house was built soon there after. Long engaged in the mining and smelting business and eventually became one of the largest taxpayers in Washington County. He also served as the sheriff and collector of Washington County for four years. He was the county’s treasurer for six years.
Long died in 1916 inside the home and is buried in the nearby Presbyterian Cemetery. Today the Mine au Breton Historical Society offers tours inside the Long-Banta House. Many of Long’s original furnishings are still on display inside the house.
“The Long-Banta home produced evidence which indicates that a possible intelligent spirit exist as it attempted to respond to questions asked by investigators through the old piano on the first floor,” said MPR President Greg Myers.
During an EVP session on the second floor of the home, several investigators said they heard notes being played on the piano downstairs in response to questions they were asking. No one was on the lower level at the time they supposedly heard the notes. Interesting enough, the piano is the type in which the keys are encased by a tri-fold wooden cover that is not easily removed. Jeremiah Niere, executive vice-president of MPR, tried to recreate the notes played on the piano and found that the cover could not be removed without making additional noises.
Judy Myers, a sensitive investigator with MPR, said she picked up on a spirit with the name of John inside the house.
“I also sensed there were three woman inside the house,” Myers said. “There were two children huddling in a second floor bedroom. I got the feeling there is also a spirit there that is concerned about people coming and going through the house.”
On Monday the Mine Au Breton Historical Society hosted night time tours of the Long-Banta House. According to members of the historical society, nearly 100 people took part in the tours. Several of them offered their own accounts of ghost sightings at the house. Some said they saw what looked like children looking outside a second floor bedroom. Others said they saw a woman looking out an upstairs window. At the time of all the accounts, no one was living at the house.

To those believers who responded: I guess this conversation has reached it's end. I pray that someone's opinion on the origin of ghosts was changed to match that of scripture.

It's not enough to just believe in God and the devil. Even the demons believe in Jesus...and tremble at His name, but they're still in hell.

To truth be told in my perspective, If you say that you are a strong believer in God; yet you do not believe the bible to be true or a religion to be right, what are you counting on to receive heaven? If you believe in God and the devil also, how do you convince yourself that you are doing what is right? Are you relying on your own conscience? The same conscience that caused the fall of the whole human race in the garden of eden. What is the origin of these ghosts that you have seen?

Just got an answer back from a Lutheran answer website. Here is what was asked and the answer:
Question -I was told that catholics and lutherans believe in ghosts, you know spiritual beings that are the cause of someone not passing over into eternity, Is that true? If you do believe in "ghosts" can you give me the scriptures to back it up? jfreak

Answer- To jfreak
Thank you for your seasonally timely question. While I cannot specifically speak for Roman Catholics, I can recall no official teaching or opinion, either in the Lutheran or Roman Catholic tradition that would support the concept of "ghosts."
While there may be individuals that hold those beliefs, the Lutheran tradition, and I am almost certain this is true of Roman Catholics as well, confesses and teaches that our souls belong to God and that at death they are in God's care. We would reject, therefore, any concept of lost, wandering spirits that wander the earth for whatever reason. I would respectfully suggest that the source that told you otherwise is mistaken.
I hope this is helpful.
Thanks,
Martin Eldred

To truth-b-told- A lot of religions claim to be the exclusive way to get to heaven, or whatever their religion calls their enlightenment or utopia. Christianity also claims that it is the only way to get to heaven. Christianity claims that that there is only one way to get to heaven, and that is through Jesus Christ. In John 14:6 →Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me. This sounds pretty exclusive and not inclusive. So if the other religions are also exclusive, why do I choose to serve Christ? He is the only one to have come back from the dead! He is the only one to have claimed deity and proved it by rising from the dead. The leaders of these other religions, Mohammed, Buddha, are still dead and still in the grave. Hinduism and Hare Krishna has no known leader or savior. I am unsure what the Lutherans or Catholics believe within their denomination; however the bible, the same one, that they use is against the belief in “ghosts” as being a person who has not passed over into their eternal destination.

To Truth-B Told: The bible is more than a history lesson and a book of letters. These scriptures are evidence toward this: 2 Timothy 3:15 And that from a child thou hast known the holy scriptures, which are able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus. :16- All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:. These scriptures also testify to the fact that the bible is the example on how we should live our life. It is also an example on the consequences of our actions. If you are a believer in God, then the bible is your source for information. If you do not believe in God, then you have fulfilled scriptures, for they say in Psalms 14:1- The fool hath said in his heart, There is no God. They are corrupt, they have done abominable works, there is none that doeth good.
Truth-B-Told in my perspective!! posted on Friday, November 2nd, 2007 at 10:32 am
What alot of you fail to remember is that the bible is a collection of stories and letters that convey the word of God as interpreted through man. The bible is also a story book and a collection of letters. It is not a rulebook on how one has to live. I am a strong believer in God and I have studied religion and theology enough to know that there is no right religion. Muslims, Hindus, Bhuddists, Hari Krishnas, Catholics, Lutherans, and many other religions do believe in ghosts. I have personally seen both ghosts and demons and know that there is a heaven and hell. I also know there is God and the devil.

To answer back to: amen? nothank you- Thank you for your comments. Your answers are straight and to the point. I do have a problem with stories that report fiction as fact. How misleading could it be to someone who read these articles for fun and interpret them as truth. The reason that see myself as have fallibility is that I have chose to take my freewill and submit myself to the God of the bible. When I pray to God I am humbling myself toward Him. I see the true condition that I am in, compared to a holy, all-powerful, all-knowing and ever present God. You must believe in the bible, because you stated that I am not suppose to judge. However, I am not judging a person but rather a spirit. From the bible that you decided to quote from it says in 1 John 4:1→Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world.

To amen? nothank you- How can heaven be death if heaven has streets of gold, gates of pearl, walls of jasper and be 12,000 furlongs, 1500 miles (a furlong=approximately 660 feet). How can this earth be hell, if the bible claims that people will be in flames for an eternity. They will be in outer darkness. They will be in so much torment that they will be grinding their teeth and biting at their tongue. It will be heaven to be in presence of God for an eternity and it will be hell to be outside of the providence of a holy God for an eternity.
amen? no thank you. posted on Thursday, November 1st, 2007 at 7:31 pm
This is just silly that an article meant as entertainment turned into bible school.
As I quote from my "friend" jfreak: "If I was to rely on what I thought, felt or seen it could be wrong, because I am fallible. ".....
It's sad to see that you are not able to truly experience free will. Just as strong as you believe in what you believe.. I believe that I AM GOD.. because the last time I prayed, I realized I was just talking to myself. To me, heaven is death and earth is hell.
I have nothing against you or what you believe... I just wish it went both ways, I mean, look at who is judging... you.. Captain Bible Thumper.. aren't you NOT supposed to judge.
Bring on the ghosts!

What about these scriptures?*Deuteronomy 18:10 There shall not be found among you any one that maketh his son or his daughter to pass through the fire, or that useth divination, or an observer of times, or an enchanter, or a witch,
*Deuteronomy 18:11 Or a charmer, or a consulter with familiar spirits, or a wizard, or a necromancer.
*1 Chronicles 10:13 So Saul died for his transgression which he committed against the LORD, even against the word of the LORD, which he kept not, and also for asking counsel of one that had a familiar spirit, to enquire of it;
*2 Chronicles 33:6 And he caused his children to pass through the fire in the valley of the son of Hinnom: also he observed times, and used enchantments, and used witchcraft, and dealt with a familiar spirit, and with wizards: he wrought much evil in the sight of the LORD, to provoke him to anger.

Acts 16:16 And it came to pass, as we went to prayer, a certain damsel possessed with a spirit of divination met us, which brought her masters much gain by soothsaying:
Acts 16:17 The same followed Paul and us, and cried, saying, These men are the servants of the most high God, which shew unto us the way of salvation.
Acts 16:18 And this did she many days. But Paul, being grieved, turned and said to the spirit, I command thee in the name of Jesus Christ to come out of her. And he came out the same hour.
Acts 16:19 And when her masters saw that the hope of their gains was gone, they caught Paul and Silas, and drew them into the marketplace unto the rulers, Leviticus 20:6 And the soul that turneth after such as have familiar spirits, and after wizards, to go a whoring after them, I will even set my face against that soul, and will cut him off from among his people.

Thank you for your comment. I am sure that more people out there are in agreement about ghosts and the paranormal. These things are the ways that the enemy of our soul tries to deceive us into believing a lie. We do not get to take the test(our life) over again. We do not get to try to come back to earn our wings. Even those familiy members that have gone on before us do not become angels.God created the angels before He created the earth. Do not be deceived, we have but one chance to live this life. We do have a choice, of two places, as to where we will spend our eternity. These two are heaven or hell. We do not have the choice to become some unhappy, unfulfilled disembodied spirit just floating around ringing doorbells, playing the piano or pulling pranks on unsuspecting people.

Jesus once said that those who choose to "believe", even though they do not "see", are more blessed. I think I'll go with what He said, thank you very much! ;- ) And as for the "paranormal" stuff going on at this place, it is nothing more than demonic activity. There is no such thing as a ghost or a disembodied spirit or being. Once a person physically dies, he/she immediately steps into eternity. And the destination of that eternity is based on the choice the individual made in his/her physical lifetime...to accept or reject Jesus as their personal Savior and Lord.

If these “ghosts” are energy, where does that energy come from? And why would that energy call itself John? If these “ghosts” are spirits, are they Godly or ungodly? People are confused about the appearance and meaning of these occurrences. However, God is not the author of confusion (1st Corinthians 14:33). I quoted some scriptures because I believe the Word of God to be the only truth, that we have, to base our decisions upon. If I was to rely on what I thought, felt or seen it could be wrong, because I am fallible.

I think that this was a very well written article, it got my attention pretty quick, and not only that but it also was nice to see something that we dont see everyday in this little town. In response to what was said by Jfreak: ghosts are energy and spirits, not words on a page like all religions are. Not that i'm against religion, I just tend to believe in things that are actually there. Like this fine newspaper for example.
jfreak64 posted on Wednesday, October 31st, 2007 at 9:25 pm
It is a sad sign of the times when our newspaper sends a reporter to report on "paranormal" behavior. Are not we a community that is mostly Christian? Their is only one record of a spiritual ghost listed in the bible, and we know where it came from, He is the Holy Ghost! Hebrews 9: 27 says: And it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgement. Second Corinthians 5: 10 says: For we must all appear before the judgement seat of Christ; that everyone may receive the things done in his body, according to that he hath done, whether it be good or bad. God's word and truth does not allow room for people who did not achieve something or failed to say something to someone, to stay behind instead of going onto their eternal destination; whether it be heaven or hell. Even if that person was wronged, abused or murdered; that person immediately steps into their eternal home, such as in Luke 16:19-31. This story relates to two people one who is in a flame and the other in comfort. These occurances in the house, and others, are either people's imagination or demonic spirits.
