• Sam T. Raines was the winner of a 1968 Plymouth Fury III, presented by Mr. and Mrs. Leo Dugal in a Dugal Big Star promotion give-away.

• Christy Miller was crowned the F.F.A. Barnwarming Queen by F.F.A. President David Swink during the organization’s Barnwarming event in the new Vocational Agriculture building at the high school. Her attendants included Jane Bone, Sherri Johnson, Pattia Ragsdale, and Cindy LaPlante.

• Trimfoot Company donated $2,500 to the Farmington Community Hospital campaign for the purpose of furnishing a “Well-Baby Clinic” or nursery.

• Roberts Office Supply in downtown Farmington advertised the Webster’s New World Dictionary for $6.95 as “the gift people open all year long”.

• Rozier Store Co. in Farmington advertised a Campus reversible ski jacket for $14.99.

• Three prisoners at the St. Francois County Jail in Farmington escaped through the ventilator duct located on the top of the jail. One later turned himself in, while the other two were caught in Florida two days after their escape.

• The Farmington Chamber of Commerce conducted a survey of 275 households, which were picked at random. Answers showed residents against one-way traffic in downtown to help solve parking problems; a 74.5 percent “yes” to a community civic center and a 43.8 percent “no” and 36.9 percent “yes” on fluoridation of city water.

• The thermometer at Mercantile Bank showed that winter had arrived early in Farmington. The temperature dropped to 34 degrees and storms in the northwest sent snow, rain, sleet and other unpleasant goodies over northwest Missouri and as close to Farmington as Rolla.

• The Chief of Engineering Geology for the state Geological Survey issued a report saying the weaknesses in some earthen dams in Missouri are so great the dams are called “time bombs”. Three percent of the dams were found to have a significant chance of failure.

• Remedial Reading teacher Nancy McLain was moving her classroom into the brand new trailer schoolhouse on the parking lot of W.L. Johns Elementary. The trailer was purchased with federal grant money.

• The roster of the 1987-88 Mineral Area Cardinals included Co-captains Justin Callahan and Kevin Lindl, Fleming Brewer, Anthony Patty, Curtis Boyland, D.J. Keeney, Rod Gross, Brad Cooper, Randy Murphy, Scott Lively, Lovell Doyle, Ted O’Bryan, Ricky Jamison, Louis Bell, and Richard Williams.

• Cheryla Boyd holds one of the most difficult jobs in any city. A story detailed her work as the animal control officer for the Farmington Police Department. She began her work in September of 1986 in that capacity.

• Thirteen band members from Farmington High School were named to “All-American Hall of Fame” band. They included Rodney Young, Charles Merritt, John Rehkop, Jennifer Meinz, Gary Reeves, Brian Hunt, Diane Hampton, Jeni Costello, Shannon Skinner, Connie Henson, Emily Dierker, Beth Bullis, and Lori Barnard.

• Bob Lewis of Farmington had the distinction of identifying 509 North American bird species by using either a powerful telescope or binoculars. That honor qualified Lewis for national recognition by the National Audubon Society.

• Christopher Reetz Photography advertised a pictures with Santa event. The cost of one 5x7, two 3x5’s and four wallets was $6.50.

• State education officials announced Farmington High School had been selected as a Gold Star School. The school was recommended to go on for the Blue Ribbon award from the National Department of Education.

• Members of the Farmington High School History Club honored veterans by placing flags at the site where the Vietnam Moving Wall once stood at the Farmington Civic Center.

• The Farmington Chapter of Women of Today presented their “WOT” (With Our Thanks) award to Ed Pfaff.

• A surprise snowstorm dumped up to five inches of snow on St. Francois County on Nov. 13. The forecast for the day called for cloudy conditions with rain. However, temperatures never rose above the mid-30’s.

• The cast and crew of Farmington High School’s Theatre Guild presented M*A*S*H.
