Man pleads to assault
Charge amended following Alford plea
FARMINGTON — An Iron County man pleaded guilty to a lesser charge just days before his trial was scheduled.
Last week, Adam J. Stephens, 28, of Ironton, entered an Alford plea to the charge of second-degree assault. By entering an Alford plea, he did not admit to any element of the charge but recognized there was sufficient evidence for trial. He had been scheduled for trial on Monday.
As part of the plea agreement, the charge was amended from a first-degree assault charge to a second-degree charge and the armed criminal action charge was dismissed.
He is scheduled to be sentenced before Circuit Court Judge Kenneth W. Pratte on Feb. 15.
According to police reports, the altercation occurred in February 2006 when a man who had been sitting in the restaurant parking lot spotted Stephens in a vehicle at the intersection of Potosi Street and Karsch Blvd.
The man aggressively approached Stephens and punched him in the nose. Stephens pulled a knife and stabbed the man in the side under the left arm and drove away.
A relative took the stabbing victim to Parkland Hospital. He was then transported by helicopter to St. John's Medical Center for further treatment of a punctured lung.
A deputy heard the radio traffic about the stabbing and spotted the suspect's vehicle at the intersection of Karsch and Washington. Stephens was taken into custody without incident and did admit to stabbing the man.
The fight was reportedly a result of an ongoing feud among the two men and the victim's family member.
In other cases, Joshua Cassidy, 26, of Farmington, was sentenced to seven years in prison for violating the probation he received for possession of marijuana and possession of oxycodone.

To:confused. The man was beating Adams head against the side of the inside of the car. Not just a single punch in the nose. What would you have done if it was you who couldn't get the man off you?

I would just like to say that Adam is a very good person. There is more to this story than you all may know but he does not deserve any type of punishment. He works very hard and does everything possible in this world to care for the children of Brandon Wade that is the so called Victims brother this whole ordeal is over Brandon. And Brandon is in court now for never paying support to his children. So if you ask me or anyone that knows Adam, he is no where near what a criminal is. I love you Adam and no matter what we will be here for you.

This is an error in our judicial system. If all the facts were presented, all would see that it was self defence. Nothing more, nothing less. I know both parties and the only thing adam was guilty of is dating the "aggressors" cousins exwife.
Hillbilly yes, but not assault!

I am confused about Friend of Family's comment & the only explanation must be is you personally know the wielder of the knife. Obviously it is a criminal & cowardly action to use a "weapon" against an unarmed man. I do agree that our legal system needs improvement, as the charges should not have been reduced.

It is a darn shame that our judicial system is like this. Here someone is sitting in their vehicle and "the man aggressively approached Stevens and punched him in the nose". I am not sure about you but I bet most of you would have done the same thing in defending yourself. There was nothing mentioned that the agressor was twice the size of the person being "punched in the nose".
It is quite a sad day for our legal system when a person is afraid to defend themselves wether is to save their life by using a knife. Or if they have to plead to a lessor crime to not take a chance of possibly getting a much more severe penalty if he would have went to court and took his chance!!
