Remember Mother's Day
Wednesday, May 14, 2008
A little early, but it’s the thought that counts ... Keith and Ginny Smith had a full house last weekend as their son and daughter and their families arrived in Farmington for an early celebration of Mother’s Day, Keith and Ginny’s up-coming anniversary and any other family occasion that falls within a close time frame. Kent and Jeanette Smith and their two children, Hunter and Sydney, arrived from Chicago, Ill. while Debbie and Jim Ferrari and daughter, Emily, came in from Cooperstown, New York. The families spent a full Saturday in St. Louis visiting the new City Museum and the Zoo before attending the Cardinal/Cubs game. It was a full day, but a happy one. The Smith clan was particularly impressed with the creative offerings of the seven-story City Museum located on Washington Street in downtown St. Louis and the new dinosaur exhibition at the Zoo.

Margaret Norton also had early visits from her family. Her son Patrick Adams from Richmond, Va. came in late last week and leaves for home today (Thursday). His son, Malcolm Adams from Affton, Mo., spent Sunday with his day and grandmother, also. Margaret’s other son, Michael Adams, from Ellisville, was here Monday to be with the family.

Proud grandparents again ... Jack and Susan Richardson welcomed another granddaughter, Maci Grace, who was born on April 17. Maci is the first child for Kyle and Dawn Richardson of Baltimore, Maryland. Congratulations to the proud parents and grandparents.

Donna and Paul Earhart of Farmington also welcomed a grandchild: Alexander Theodore Earhart was born April 7 to Steven and Jessica Earhart of Arnold, Mo. Great-grandmother is Elsie Shelley of Leadington, Mo.

Jim and Marlene Ragland were presented with a granddaughter on April 21 when Molli Katherine Ragland was born to Scott Ragland and Jennifer Wollard. Skylar Ragland is the proud big sister. Maternal grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. Mike Wollard of Festus.

Presbyterian Home Reunion plans move ahead ... The reunion for the former residents of the Farmington Presbyterian Children’s Home is planned for July of this year. Ida Taylor and her brother Jim Dawson have already heard from several of the former residents and are searching for information on any other former residents, and ask that anyone who lived at the Home or Boy’s Farm, or knows someone who did, contact them. Also if you have information about a former resident, please give them a call. They would also like pictures and memorabilia on the Home and Boy’s Farm to display at the reunion. Contact Ida at 518-0496 or Jim at 756-7274.

Send birthday greeting to Iraq for Jason Dane who turns the big 3-0 on May 22. Friends said, when his wife hit that date, he was the first one to tease her to no end. and he thinks since he will not be home the date will go unnoticed. Jason is serving his second tour of duty in Iraq. He missed celebrating his 1st and 5th anniversary with his wife and the birth of his son in December. He is currently restricted to base (and bored) because when doing some repairs on a tank he smashed his hand, had to have surgery to repair two broken bones in his finger, and the pins will not be removed till later this month. You’re invited to be part of the fun of a card shower for him. His address is:

Spc. Jason Dane, 1138th Co (SAPPER), Unit 43483, APO AE 09344-348.

Brighten his day and let him know distance is no escape from birthdays!

Two other birthday boys, Lou Fabre and Jim Snaveley celebrated their joint birthdays on April 21 by playing golf at the St. Francois Country Club. No word that either of them received the gift of a hole-in-one that day. Maybe next year when they turn 40 ... again.

Betty Shanks celebrated her 70th birthday on May 5 and is also now home from the hospital. Cards would greatly lift her spirit.

Delores Plummer and Nancy Halbrook will celebrate their birthdays on May 23. Delores is busy now getting ready for the annual Twenty-Five Gardener’s Bake and Plant Sale this Friday.

Bloom and Bake ... The Twenty-Five Gardener’s will hold their annual sale of homemade baked goods and home-grown plants this Friday morning, starting at 7 a.m. on E. Columbia Street in front of The Fire House Grill just across from the Post Office. Get there early for the best of the best, across from the Post Office.

Sincere sympathy to the family of Lester Gray, who passed away Tuesday evening, May 6 after battling heart complications for many years. He is survived by his wife, Virginia, and two sons, Larry and Tim Gray along with their families, and many friends. Lester was one of the founding members of The Bridge congregation in Leadington.

Be a part of the pride ... The Farmington High School Black Knight Marching Band and the High School Choir will be presenting the National Anthem at the Monday night, June 2nd Cardinal Baseball game. They will be joined by members of the Farmington Elk’s Lodge who will carry the immense American Flag during the opening ceremony. To find out about tickets for that night, call the high school or the Cardinal’s box office. Let’s have a great Farmington showing!

It’s time to swing ... The Kiwanis will hold their annual Mark Griggs Memorial Golf Tournament on Friday, June 20 at the Crowne Point Golf Club (formerly Ealge Lake). To sign up a team for the 4-person scramble contact Amanda Griggs-Farrell at 366-8301, Sheila allen at 701-0651, or Natalie Bannister at 631-2402. Cost is $260 per team.

The Chamber of Commerce and this community are gearing up for the 30th annual Country Days Celebration that hits town the first weekend in June!. The theme for this year’s milestone festival is “A Journey Through Time … 30 Years of Country Days.” The free Saturday night concert this year will feature Sammy Kershaw. Between 30,000 and 40,000 people are expected to attend Country Days this year. Be a part of it: float entries, booth space, game sponsorships, and much more are available by contacting Director Ursula Kthiri at 756-3615 or stop by the Chamber office.

Traffic flow ... Find out what’s in the works for improving traffic flow on Columbia Street and connecting areas at the Chamber of Commerce monthly meeting May 15 at Alexander’s in The Factory. City Manger Greg Beavers will be there with charts, maps, information and answers to questions on what’s planned for Farmington’s future. The meeting starts at 12 noon and adjourns at 1 p.m.

A big thank you to the city for conducting the annual Spring Clean-Up in April. It was a great way to get rid of accumulated and unwanted items around the house and yard. It also presented a great curb junking opportunity for the many who cruised the streets. The City crews had less to haul away after the items had been well picked over, but they still worked hard and did a great job of cleaning up.

Be sure to remember your mother this Sunday. Share the day with her in person or with a call if at all possible. And, for those of us who’s mothers are deceased, we’ll share the day with them in hearts filled with memories and gratitude.
