Empire District can charge extra $200 for rising gas prices
Sunday, June 08, 2008
JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) — Another Missouri utility has permission to charge consumers more because of rising natural gas prices.

The Empire District Gas Co. is the most recent. Last week, AmerenUE, Atmos Energy and Missouri Gas Energy were allowed to charge their customers more this winter.

The increased gas prices come because the utilities must spend more to buy natural gas from their suppliers. The extra cost takes effect this month and can be adjusted several times each year. It accounts only for buying gas and not any profits.

The increase for Empire District customers will vary from $186 to $242 over the winter, depending upon where they live. The cost can be spread over the November-to-March heating season.

I have heard several experts say the price of gas is tied to speculation in oil futures. First of all, OIL and Gas should not be traded like poker chips. The consequences of a mistake are far too grave. Look whats happening in Europe now withe strikes and protests etc. Imagine if the same thing happened here. To help make my point imagine if we traded wheat commodities and wheat jumped 100 percent so we all jumped in and bought more... soon the whole world would starve. Oil is not as necessary as wheat but still it's a key commodity and it's basic for the proper operation of commerce in America. For investers to gamble with this commodity in Futures speculation is very irrational and irresponsible. By the way the word gamble comes from the word game,.. but this is no game is it... If the Law-makers and Government don't understand this then they should also be held responsible for the damages
