Teams of 217 youth and adults from seven states converge on the Parkland July 5-12, hoping to leave it a little better than they found it. They’re members of World Changers, a mission outreach sponsored by the North American Mission Board of the Southern Baptist Convention.
Craig and Jami Pope have traveled with the group on mission trips in past years and applied this year to bring the group here. With the help of the East Missouri Action Agency, they’ve lined up 18 jobs for the work crews to tackle.
“We’re doing eight roof replacements, painting, putting in a concrete driveway, handrails and handicap ramps,” said Jami. “We have a budget of about $15,000 and we have received good deals from Lowe’s Flat River Building Supply and ABC Supply for materials.”
Donations may still be made to help with the project through EMAA. The work is provided to homeowners at no cost. Money is also provided through a grant from EMAA and the U.S. Dept. of Agriculture.
Crews start work on July 7. They are coming from Houston, Tex., Muncie, Ind., Memphis and Nashville, Tenn., West Helena, Ark. Wichita, Kan., Edwardsville and Wilmington, Ill. and Russellville and Buffalo, Mo.
They will work in Park Hills, Bonne Terre, Farmington, Desloge, Leadwood and Bismarck. They’re sponsored by various churches in the area who will provide meals and help transport them from place to place. They will stay at North County High School.
“On July 6, they will walk around the communities where they will be working and leave fliers to let people know who they are and what they’re doing,” Jami explained. “On Wednesday of that week, we’ll have a fun day for them and they’ll eat lunch and swim at Columbia Park. Parallax View will provide them with a free concert.”
World Changers began with a focus on involving senior high youth in hands-on missions. Since its beginning in 1990, World Changers has been committed to offering first-rate mission experiences. World Changers has expanded every year. It now offers a variety of projects for all ages. Other projects in Missouri in 2008 are scheduled for Moberly, Trenton, St. Louis and Hannibal.
