Two people killed in unrelated accidents
Accidents Thursday kill two, injure several others

Two local people were killed in unrelated accidents on Thursday.

The first accident took place at 7:05 a.m. on Highway 8 in Washington County.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, a vehicle driven by Shane Mallott, 29, Potosi, traveled off the south side of the road and struck a tree head-on. Mallott suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the Washington County Memorial Hospital at 8:09 a.m. He was not wearing a seatbelt.

The other fatal accident took place at 3:55 p.m. on US 67 at Hedgeapple Lane in St. Francois County. It involved a Dodge Dakota and a Harley Davidson.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, a Harley Davidson ridden by Robert Kornhardt, 53, French Village, was traveling at an excessive rate of speed. A Dodge Dakota driven by Leland Gielow, 81, Bonne Terre, turned into the path of the Harley Davidson. The Harley Davidson struck the truck in the passenger side.

Kornhardt suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene by St. Francois County Coroner Jim Coplin. Edna Gielow, 77, Bonne Terre, suffered serious injuries and was taken to Mineral Area Regional Medical Center by St. Francois County Ambulance. Leland Gielow, 81, Bonne Terre, also sustained serious injuries and was flown to St. Francois Hospital in Cape Girardeau by Air Evac.

In another unrelated accident on Thursday, a two-vehicle accident on US 67 in Jefferson County resulted in four people going to the hospital.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, a vehicle driven by Billie Sanderson, 30, St. Cloud, Fla., stopped for a red signal. A vehicle driven by Susie Casteel, 53, St. Cloud, Fla., failed to stop and hit the rear of Sanderson’s vehicle.

Casteel suffered minor injuries and was taken to Jefferson Memorial Hospital by Joachim Plattin Ambulance. Clayton Henderson, 15, Leadwood, suffered minor injuries and was taken to Jefferson Memorial Hospital by Joachim Plattin Ambulance. Hope Henderson, 1, Leadwood, suffered minor injuries and was taken to Jefferson Memorial Hospital by Joachim Plattin Ambulance. Sally Henderson, 26, Leadwood, sustained minor injuries and was taken to Jefferson Memorial Hospital by Joachim Plattin Ambulance.
