FARMINGTON — In the last night of competition for MABA’s 13-year-olds league, the six teams were each to play two opponents in tri-headers to finish out their 12-game schedule.
The Farmington BlueJays and the Leadwood Marlins were tied going into the night, but both teams were scheduled to play different opponents with three games being played at Farmington and three at Leadwood.
With the Park Hills Astros forfeiting their last two games at Farmington, the only obstacle in the BlueJays way of clinching a tie or possible winning the league was the Bonne Terre Broncos. The BlueJays left no doubt of their wanting to be the champions with a 19-0 taming of the Broncos.
The BlueJays (11-1) realized their wish of winning the league title being granted upon hearing the news that the Marlins had lost their first game. For fun, the Bluejays and the Broncos played a second game that did not count in league play.
Jared Dunlap utilized his team’s defense to silence the Broncos bats for the most part in pitching four scoreless inning for the BlueJays. Dunlap struck out only three batters, but the Broncos could only muster three singles, one each by Jacob Barbee, Kaleb Warden and Jesse Schwent against the BlueJays stifling defense.
The BlueJays offense produced six doubles and seven singles in giving Dunlap plenty of backing in what became the championship finale. The BlueJays scored seven runs in the first inning and added four more in inning two to run away with the game early.
Jimmy Moore hit two doubles, and Josh Thomas, Zach Greif, Evan Dunivan and Calvin Lynch had one apiece. Dante Castro and Sam Thompson had two singles each, and Dunlap, Dunivan and Lynch each hit one single.
In the game that did not count, the Broncos scored four times in the bottom of the seventh to win by a score of 11-10.
