FRANKCLAY — The Senior Babe Ruth Missouri State Tournament has been in action at the Frankclay Baseball Field starting on Thursday and continuing on until Monday (or Tuesday).

So far, the hosting team MABA Pirates have been successful in staying in the winner’s bracket with two straight wins, their latest a 9-8 walk-off win in the seventh inning over Boonville on Saturday.

The Pirates will seek to continue their good fortune today at 4:30 p.m. against Charleston in what could be considered as a semi-final game. The winner will definitely play for the state championship with the right to advance on to the Midwest Regionals.

With the score tied 8-8 in the Pirates last scheduled at-bats, Andrew Reed was hit by a pitch after one out to set up the final inning scenario. Travis Brotherton attempted a sacrifice bunt to put Reed in scoring position, but the bunt was a little too good and turned into a single. Reed who was off on the pitch was able to advance all the way to third on the play.

That set the stage for the Pirates lead-off batter Kyle Nettles, and he delivered big time with a line drive to left-center that went all the way to the wall to score Reed and end the game.

The Pirates fell behind twice in the game. Spotting Boonville three runs in the top of the first inning, the Pirates answered with four runs of their own in the bottom of the inning. Taking starting pitcher Josh Akers place in the line-up, John Schnurbusch hit a grand slam to give the Pirates their first lead.

A couple of walks in the third inning led to another run for the Pirates with an RBI single by Jake Gidden. The Pirates tacked on two more runs in the fourth with an error by the Boonville pitcher and singles by Nettles, Matt Kemp and Ethan Sitton in the inning.

Boonville regained the lead at 8-7 in the top of the fifth inning. Singles by Shawn Bruce, Will Parker, Jacob Davis and Evan Kaiser and a walk issued to Uriah Otten resulted in four runs.

The Pirates tied the game in the bottom of the fifth inning with the help of Boonville’s defense. A one-out single Trevor Kean was followed by a sacrifice bunt by Reed, but a hasty throw by the pitcher to second reached the centerfielder instead, and Kean added another base to his efforts.

The Pirates gave the opportunity to Boonville to get out of the inning without any harm, but Boonville gave it right back. A high, fly ball to first base had double play written all over it, since Reed had already left on the pitch for second. The catch was made, but the time lapse of the falling ball resulted in three defensive player at first base, and the resulting toss was dropped allowing Reed to safely return.

The defensive miscue allowed Nettle to come to the plate, and he delivered a line drive single off the tip of a leaping second baseman’s glove to score Kean.

Boonville’s Evan Kaiser hit a one-out double, but first baseman Jake Gidden gunned him down at third  after taking the throw at first from Kean at short on a ground ball to complete the double play.

Ryan Calvird was on the mound in the seventh inning for the win.

On Friday, the Pirates won an 11-3 ball game over the Northeast Missouri team. Ethan Sitton recorded the win with five innings of work and a three-run home run in the first inning. The score was 5-3 going into the sixth inning when the Pirates broke it wide open with their final six runs.

Nettles, Kemp, and Akers all had one single in the game and Gidden hit a triple.
