When Eugene Shannon brags about having some big tomatoes at home in his garden ... well, he’s not bragging. The Farmington gardener recently displayed some of the “fruits” of his labors. Which brings up the age-old question of “is a tomato a fruit or vegetable?” A little impromptu research revealed that back in 1893, in the case of Nix v. Hedden the United States Supreme Court ruled that, while botanically speaking a tomato is a fruit, under the Tariff Act of 1883 the tomato was classified as a vegetable.
