Groundbreaking held for airport terminal

Dignitaries and others with an interest gathered Wednesday morning to officially break ground at the Farmington Regional Airport for a new terminal building.
The near $400,000 construction project is the next phase in a multi-year expansion and improvement of the regional air portal. Other improvements have included a new fuel delivery system, new shade ports to replace old worn t-hangars, and a new parallel taxiway to be built.
Wednesday’s ceremony was to officially begin construction of the new 2,300-square-foot terminal complete with a visitor’s center, pilot lounge, airport manager’s office and conference room.
City council members awarded the contract for $392,000 to Indian Creek Construction, based in Poplar Bluff, during Monday evening’s council meeting.
Construction will begin immediately and should be completed within a few months.
The new terminal will include a conference room paid for in part by businessman William “Bill” Cooper. The building will carry signage as part of a funding agreement between the city and First State Community Bank, based in Farmington. As part of the same agreement FSCB receives a multi-year option on a ground lease to construct a hangar at the airport.
The majority of funding to build the terminal, as well as the other recent improvements at the airport, is coming from the Federal Aviation Administration and Missouri Department of Transportation.
