Economic pressure has made fundraising efforts more important for a wide variety of charities, and the Shared Blessings Homeless Shelter is no exception.
President Charlene Huskey says the shelter has seen an increased demand as the economy has worsened and layoffs have increased. “With so many people in the shelter everything is higher,” she added. “Electric bills, food, we have to have more of everything.”
The shelter is supported entirely by donations from community members and church groups. Shelter residents are screened to ensure they truly need help and they must work toward independence during their stay. They must also attend an area church, although they are not required to attend a particular one.
The shelter is planning a trivia event to raise money in October and will be meeting Tuesday night to finalize details of the event. The dinner begins at 6:30 p.m. at Rosener’s Restaurant and the meeting begins at 7. Anyone wishing to help with the event is encouraged to attend the meeting.
This is the second year for the trivia event, which features a free food bar, themed baskets and games in addition to the trivia contest.
The contest is again being organized by Kimball Crum. He’ll have 10 questions in 10 categories to test the trivia teams’ knowledge.
Cost to participate will be $10 per person and teams may have up to 10 people on them.
Proceeds of this year’s event will be matched by the Lutheran Church in Park Hills. They are matching up to $800.
Start time for the trivia event Oct. 11 is 6:30 p.m. at Rosener’s Banquet Hall. The hall is being donated for the event.
Baskets, prizes and donations are still being accepted. For information about the event or to donate something, contact Charlene Huskey at 358-2686.
Huskey said the baskets have proven extremely popular in the past. They have included such themes as anniversaries and Thanksgiving and generally include a lot of gift certificates from area businesses.
“They were worth quite a bit of money,” Huskey said. “They were very popular and everyone who attended the trivia last year said they had a ball.”
In addition to the trivia event, the group will discuss holding an open house barbecue in October to show the shelter to the public.
The group meets monthly on the second Tuesday of the month. A previous article incorrectly said they meet the third Tuesday of the month. The meeting date was different last month, but that was a one-time change.
