Tune into KSDK about 1 p.m. Monday and you just may spot a dancer from the Parkland. She’s Rhonda Crocker, a Bonne Terre woman who traveled to see the Ellen DeGeneres show last week and wound up being selected to dance in the aisle.
“During a break, they play music and this guy goes around with T-shirts and watches you dance and he picks out six people to dance for the audience,” said Crocker. “I was the 5th one picked out of about 300 in the audience and the audience picked the one they liked the best.”
Crocker wasn’t their pick, but she still had a good time and said they told her she might show up on Monday’s show — the first of the new season. Guests include Michelle Obama and the Jonas Brothers.
Crocker said she’s been trying for two years to get tickets to the show that she says always makes her laugh. Two weeks ago, she signed up on the show’s Web site for the umpteenth time and three hours later, she got a phone call asking her if she could make it for the Sept. 3 taping and how many tickets did she need. She told them “four” and called her friends Kelly Penberthy, Desloge, Debbie Hoskin, Bonne Terre and Victoria Reeves, Park Hills, to make the trip with her. She sold two pair of Neil Diamond concert tickets on eBay to help pay for her trip.
“I may have to have a yard sale to pay for the rest!” she said.
They brought home free Jonas Brothers’ CDs and Nair products — because that’s who sponsors the Jonases. They’d hoped since it was Ellen’s first show in high definition, they might get free HDTVs.
“She does give away things like that sometimes, but not this time,” said Crocker.
Crocker has been in a Daily Journal story before. In 2004, Renee Jean wrote about her and her daughter as they took part in a Colossus Ferris Wheel riding contest at Six Flags. Crocker says she’s always entering contests. And, she’s won quite a few — mostly from calling into a radio show. She’s been to Mexico four times, to New York to see the Dave Matthews Band and again to see the American Idols.
“The trick is to keep hitting re-dial and do not give up,” she said. “Sometimes, I use as many as four phones at one time.”
Penberthy said her friend got her hooked and she, too, has won a few contests.
Next on their list: tickets to the Oprah Show.
