O.J.
Wednesday, September 10, 2008
That’s probably a good thing. The O.J. murder trial did not do much to inspire faith in the American judicial system. The Observer has never met a single person who thought O.J. was innocent. You may recall that shortly after the verdict, Andy Rooney offered a million dollars to anyone who could provide information leading to the arrest of the murderer of Nicole Brown and Ron Goldman. As far as the Observer knows, no one (including O.J. himself) has ever made any effort to pursue Rooney’s offer. That’s because everyone (including O.J.) knows it would be an exercise in futility.
The Observer is a fan the of restaurant owner in Louisville who wouldn’t let O.J. eat in his restaurant while O.J. was in town to enjoy the Kentucky Derby.
The trial itself was bizarre, at least from our Midwestern perspective. For starters, it lasted over nine months. As far as the Observer can tell, trials around here – even big ones – last only two or three days. And Lance Ito. The Observer has met each of the judges in our county, and it’s safe to say that none of them will ever be confused with Lance Ito.
The function of the judicial system is to do justice among society’s members and resolve disputes between them. Basically, the judicial system is supposed to replace the six-gun. But the judicial system doesn’t work unless everyone trusts it. For example, the father of a murder victim might be inclined to seek his own form of justice (in the form of violent revenge) if he thinks justice won’t be done in the courtroom.
So the judicial system is more than just a place where lawyers make money. The judicial system is important to our peaceful co-existence.
Like the Observer said, it’s a good thing today’s kids can’t remember the O.J. trial.
The Settlement Observer is a resident of Farmington.
