POTOSI — Senior Bethany McCoy drilled the first pitch of the eighth inning into the right-field corner for a triple, then scored the winning run on a wild pitch Thursday as Potosi rallied in the rain for a 6-5 victory over Farmington.
Catcher Ashley Duncan went 3-for-3 with two RBI and Tiffany Evans added a pair of singles for the Lady Trojans, who completed the conference sweep over the Knightettes following a 3-2 triumph on August 26.
Potosi (5-3) trailed by four runs entering the home half of the sixth, but fully capitalized on a lead-off walk and a throwing error during a disputed call at second base to erase the deficit.
Farmington pitcher Erin Littrell made a difficult flip with her back to first base for the first out, but a dropped fly ball in the outfield allowed a second run to score. Consecutive two-out RBI singles by Duncan and Ali Rhodes evened the score at 5-5.
Jinnger Rogers escaped the seventh inning after the Knightettes placed runners at the corners, and pitched around a lead-off walk in the eighth to secure the win. The Potosi starter yielded two earned runs on five hits.
Farmington (4-6) struck quickly during the opening frame with the help of three Potosi errors. Shortstop Allie Trask and Littrell sandwiched singles around a walk to Meyer before two more runs scored on a wild throw.
Potosi second baseman Kayti Stone turned a stinging line drive into an unassisted double play that kept the score at 3-0, and made seven total putouts on the day.
Duncan doubled home Takiesha Cluck in the fifth to put the Lady Trojans on the scoreboard, but the youthful Knightettes promptly increased their lead with two tallies in the fifth.
Freshman catcher Natalie Hoehn slugged a triple to the left-center gap, and crossed the plate on a Rachel Porter fielder’s choice to make it 4-1. Freshman infielder Tayler Benne scored later on a wild pitch after drawing a walk.
Littrell allowed just two earned runs on eight hits, and fanned three batters in the loss. Trask finished 2-for-5 to pace the Knightettes, who dropped their fourth contest in five tries despite recording no strikeouts at the plate.
