North County volleyball records first win

BONNE TERRE — The North County volleyball team wasted three match points against Union during the middle game, but regrouped to claim its first win of the season 25-14, 24-26, 25-23 over Union on Thursday night.

Tia Propst sent down 12 kills and Ashley Lotz ripped 10, while setter Kassi Hovis piled up 40 assists to lead North County (1-3). Allison Hughes was kept busy defensively with 28 digs.

Abby Montgomery had a strong serving night with 13 points and Mallory Hicks added seven for the Lady Raiders, who will host a 13-team field for its annual tournament on Saturday.

Central 2, Herculaneum 0

PARK HILLS
— The Central volleyball team displayed all-around improvement while returning to the win column at home on Thursday night, cruising past Herculaneum 25-8, 25-16.

Jaycee Haus knocked down six kills and Elizabeth Hartupee added five at the net, while Alicia Sebastian led the Central defense with six digs. Setters Tori Boyer and Megan Simpson combined for 15 assists.

The Lady Rebels (2-2) begin action at the SEMO Tournament tonight with pool matches against Lebanon and Twin Rivers.

West County 2, Arcadia Valley 1

IRONTON
— The West County Lady Bulldogs recovered from a deflating home loss on Wednesday by storming back on Thursday for a 16-25, 25-20, 25-16 triumph at conference rival Arcadia Valley.

Becca Appel charted six kills and three blocks along with 13 points, and Chelsie Lashley served a team-high 16 points with two blocks for West County (2-2).

Brittany Tongay brought up eight digs and Taylor Watson set for 10 assists, while Rikki Lashley compiled 14 points in the victory.

Sidney Rice spiked 12 kills to lead all players, and Gail Williams made four solo blocks with seven kills while serving eight points for the Lady Tigers (1-2). Nichole Bone finished with 12 assists and seven points.

Valley 2, Kingston 0

CADET
— After securing the opening game by the slimmest of margins on Thursday, the Valley Lady Vikings served their way to a 25-23, 25-17 triumph at Kingston in the conference opener for both teams.

Jessica Crocker led Valley (2-2) in blocks, digs, kills and aces with three each, while matching Taylar Turner with nine points. Kaitlin Holbert had four assists, Randi Goggin added two kills and Danielle Johnson served eight points.

Becky Brown led all players with 10 points, while Jacie Missey and Lacie Pashia each had eight for Kingston (2-2). Emilee Dicus posted four kills and Miranda Politte dished out six assists.



Chester 2, Fredericktown 1

FREDERICKTOWN
— The Fredericktown Lady Cats tasted defeat for the first time this season on Thursday night, as visiting Chester locked up a 25-23, 16-25, 25-19 win.

Lauren Henderson posted balanced totals with nine kills, five solo blocks, six digs and four aces. Chelsea Mills recorded a team high 10 digs with 10 points and five kills for Fredericktown (3-1).

Setter Allison McDowell led with 16 assists and 11 points, and Kylie Oertel made five solo blocks and six digs. Mallory Allgier finished with six digs and Rikki Firebaugh added three blocks.

SOFTBALL

North County 10, Ste. Genevieve 0

BONNE TERRE
— Jennifer Hackworth fired a two-hit shutout from the circle on her 18th birthday, and the North County softball team continued its unbeaten streak on Thursday with a 10-0 victory over Ste. Genevieve.

Hackworth (4-0) compiled 10 strikeouts while issuing no walks over five innings, and also finished 2-for-3 with a double and two RBI at the plate. Katie Gibson paced the North County offense by going 3-for-3 with a double and two RBI.

Jamie Bullock, Heather Shannon and Brittani O’Connell added hits for the Lady Raiders (7-0), who netted five runs in the second inning. Taylor McMillon and Leticia Hindrichs each singled for the Hunters (3-10).

Fredericktown 6, Central 2

PARK HILLS
— Senior Kelsey Johnston drove in four runs with a pair of key hits on Thursday, and Fredericktown avenged an earlier conference setback to Central with a 6-2 road win.

Fredericktown (3-5) held a 3-2 lead through six innings before Johnston provided some insurance with a three-run triple. Alyssa Buxton also collected two singles for the Lady Cats.

Nikki Mascaro escaped a bases-loaded jam in the bottom of the seventh to nail down the victory, as the Lady Rebels (2-5) brought the potential tying run to the plate. The freshman hurler recorded five strikeouts and yielded one earned run on six hits.

Ashley Coplin paced the Central offense by going 2-for-4. Amber Kennedy and Kylie Horton also singled.

FALL BASEBALL

West County 14, Valley 4

LEADWOOD
— Tyler Stacy finished 3-for-3 with two RBI and Kyle Nettles added a three-run double on Thursday, as the West County baseball team notched a 14-4 victory in five innings over Valley.

Cody Watson and Coty Shannon contributed two hits apiece, and Brandon Turner drove in three runs for West County. Zac Turner also added a hit.

Trevor Kean allowed three earned runs and struck out five over three innings for the win. Justin Lashley pitched two scoreless frames in relief, and singled during his lone plate appearance for the Bulldogs (3-1).

BOYS SOCCER

Poplar Bluff 3, Fredericktown 1

FREDERICKTOWN
— Poplar Bluff scored first-half goals on a long header and an own goal before holding off host Fredericktown, 3-1 in soccer action on Thursday afternoon.

Ryly Roberts made a strong individual run to snap the potential shutout with a late unassisted goal for the Blackcats. Tyler Hagy made eight save in goal.
