The national media and us
Wednesday, September 17, 2008
It was with unfettered glee that the national media press broke the news. Sarah Palin’s 17 year old daughter was pregnant. Midwestern Christians — the media was sure — would ostracize the whole Palin family.

Conservatives, who are supposed to be the very base of Palin’s popularity, we expected to smite the Palinfidels like the Old Testament God used to smite the Hittites and Phillistines. Oh, the joy and merriment at CNN and NBC.

After high-fiving one another, the media hauled out Christian leaders from across the country to hear them verbally stone the Palin family for the shameful fornication in their midst.

But the media was disappointed.

Conservative folks did not break out torches and pitchforks to banish the immoral Palin clan. Instead, the media heard, first, a collective expression of sympathy for the problems that all families endure and, second, a collective endorsement of the way the Palin family is handling the situation (i.e. with the family pulling together to unconditionally support Bristol Palin and her unborn baby).

The media was shocked and confused. Apparently the cretins in the Midwest didn’t get it. Where was the outrage from conservative Christians? Where was the condemnation? And so the media screamed all the louder: Sarah Palin’s daughter is pregnant out-of-wedlock.

But the national media continued to be disappointed. And they will continue to be disappointed.

You see, the national media — based on the coasts to our East and West — doesn’t get us. They and the so-called intellectual elites mistake Midwestern conservative values for bigotry. Midwesterners are, in the national media’s view, the Christian (and moral) equivalent of the Taliban.

Yes, we proudly have values. Family values. Common sense values. Whatever you want to call them. But one of the values (indeed, Jesus called it the greatest virtue) is love.

The national media would do well to remember that.

I don't think the press reported with "unfettered glee" the news of Palin's daughter's pregnancy.

I am sure they expected there would be an honest debate about a national candidate's stand on sex education (she wants abstinence only). This is a valid expectation.

I support the family's reaction and their support for her and her pregnancy. It is very fortunate that she has that support -- many young women do not. And that is why a comprehensive sex education is the only way to go. Yes, abstinence should be part of the program and stressed it is the only way to be 100% safe. But we all know how it works with teenagers and peer pressure.

So, the press should have expected to see an honest debate and questioning of the candidate's stand on sex education.
