UPDATE: Investigators have a clearer picture of the facts of Monday's abduction after talking with Kory Wakefield. Check back for new details as they become available.Leadington police on Tuesday continued to investigate the Monday abduction of a local teenager.
Sgt. Rick Pogue said he hoped to have a sketch artist work with Kory Wakefield, 17, to develop a drawing of the man who abducted Kory at gunpoint as the teenager was heading for school at Central High. Pogue did not know how soon he could get an artist in to do the sketch, but wants to do so as soon as possible.
Pogue hopes fingerprints found in Kory’s truck will lead to the suspected abductor. Police processed the white Ford F250 after Kory purposely ran it into a tree in Macon County.
“We are sending the fingerprints off to the FBI,” Pogue said. He added that he did not know how long it would take to get an answer from the federal investigators.
Police had asked Mineral Area College (MAC) security to look for an abandoned or unaccounted for vehicle at the college Monday, in case the suspect had abandoned a vehicle in the lot. No vehicle was found.
Investigators also have asked several counties to let him know if any bank or business reported being robbed, as the suspect was carrying a money bag. No reports had been filed, Pogue said on Tuesday.
Kory and his family were “still a little shaken up,” his mother, Katrina Wakefield, said on Tuesday. Kory and his girlfriend, Katelyn Neff, spent Tuesday away from his house. Wakefield was not sure when Kory would go back to school.
“His neck and shoulder hurt a little from when he crashed the truck,” Wakefield said. “None of us slept last night.”
Friends and family packed the Wakefield home Monday night to greet Kory as he arrived home with his father, Sonny Wakefield, and his uncle, Lindell Barton. Kory’s ordeal had started more than 12 hours earlier, when he left the house at 7:10 a.m. to go to school. According to Kory’s family, police and the Macon County Sheriff’s Department, the following events took place.
Kory started the truck, then got out. Meanwhile, a man who had walked across the field from the MAC dorms came up to Kory, pulled out a pistol and ordered the high school football player to drive him to Columbia. Later, the man changed his mind and told Kory to take him to Kirksville.
Soon after his abduction, Kory secretly sent a text message to his girlfriend to let her know he was in trouble.
When the truck arrived in Macon County, the man ordered Kory into the Atlanta conservation area and told him to pull into an old logging road. Instead, Kory ran the truck into a tree and jumped out. He ran away from the truck and the man called someone on a cell phone. A red vehicle picked the man up a few minutes later.
Kory headed through the woods to the highway, where a motorist gave him a ride. During that time, he spoke with Katelyn, his father and the Macon County Sheriff’s Department. Missouri Highway Patrol officers picked him up and took him to the Sheriff’s Department to await a ride home.
The abduction shattered the sense of security the Wakefields and other neighbors had felt in their community.
“In that area, it’s family and friends,” said Krystal Kaiser, Kory’s aunt. “You don’t lock your cars, you don’t lock your doors.
“We will now.”
As a Leadington alderwoman, Katrina Wakefield said the incident made clear a need she will work to meet.
“We definitely need more police protection in that area,” she said. I’m going to work on getting it.”

Well good for them if they are ticking people on the highway, in the town, on a back road, where ever....maybe they will save your miserable life one day.

as to hiding on a blog... let's see... we can't walk from our house to our truck without being accosted by gun toteing criminals.... why would i give my name out on a blog???
that's plain stupid.
2nd, as to the city hall, would do me no good.. i live in PH, not leadington.
However, as only an imaginary line seperates the two towns, I have a strong interest in this case.
Do I need to pull my shotgun out of the cabinet and keep it loaded in the bedroom?
Or is this story a beautiful piece of fiction???
Nobody knows, as no one will give the community any more information.
I understand the need for information to be kept quiet so the investigation can procede and be prosecuted, but the community has a right to know what is going on.
Are we in danger? Are our children in danger???
Don't worry.. I guess the Leadington Police Department will keep us all safe.... (they should.. the ticket drivers all over the county from Farmington to Bonne Terre)

wakefield.. parsons is a sick man and will get what he deserves in prison... i believe if you read everything, you would have seen my post...
by the way.. he's in court.. getting his just rewards..
this case has been a circus act since it happened...
then, no one posted or reported on it for a week...
what happened??? did Leadington PD sweep it under the rug?
Did the truth come out, and in the interest of a juvenille, they decide to not report anything???
people quit commenting. reporters didn't announce anything else..
what makes me sick is we live in a community where a man carjacked a teenager (allegedly) and NO ONE HAS AN OPINION OR UPDATE FOR OVER A WEEK????
Come on...
Where is the justice, where is the law evforcement working around the clock to find this man?
It seems that no one cares, and no one is doing anything.
i will start a 2nd one because i'm not done...

You know....if you're so "tiredofthebull" why don't you go down to the city hall or attend the next city council meeting and get your answers and air your complaints and stop hiding behind your comments on this blog. I've looked at other stories within this site and you have a negative comment for about 99% of what is reported. You must lead a miserable existance to be such a negative person. I guess it's tough to be such a leading authority of what is right & wrong or true & false.
I was not going to comment here but I just read the story about this Parsons guy. It made my stomach turn. I have 2 kids and I can not imagine this man doing this to someone I love. Why don't you pore your energy into fighting against people like that instead of feeding off these stories that you have absolutely no part of.
Stop attacking the comments by other people who do not share your opinion. You are a bully. Enough already!

I, for one, can't wait to hear the TRUTH on this one...
SOMEone is going to go to jail for what happened. I think (someone correct me if I'm wrong)that an Armed Kidnapping is a Federal offense, and will be under the auspices of the FBI...
and in the end, the TRUTH will be a matter of public record, no matter who reports on it.
- let's be grateful he's okay, bide our time, and,
- let Justice be served.

It dont matter what state this story is published in, any one with an ounce of common sense is questioning this story. Just way too many versions so far. Here's an idea to shut all of us up. Hook the young man up to a lie detector. Make sure they get someone that knows how to give the test though, don't go to the same place you got the sketch artist. Its time for the truth to come out about this!!

Channel 11 and the DJ are the only ones reporting that fingerprints and hair were found, it looks like both of these were quoting Cledith - (who ONLY deals in facts). The AP wire and Macon County report no fingerprints found other than Kory's. So, that is yet another troubling discrepancy - Leadington found prints in the truck after Macon County processed it and found none? Maybe Macon County was misquoted and all other news outlets are wrong - maybe the processing in Macon County did find prints and other physical evidence and all sources other than Leadington got it wrong. I wonder if Macon County really processed the truck? Time will tell on this one.

This is exactly why Missouri is called "The Show Me State" because Missouri natives are suspicious of everyone and everything. Just remember all the bullcrap stories that surfaced about what "really happened" to Shawn Hornbeck. And YES, it IS possible to send text messages from a cell phone in your pocket. I've heard of drug store techs doing the same thing while on the job.

The story being in two different versions just proves noone knows what their talking about. Get together, make up one story and stick with it instead of changing it ever time the journal is published.
And mr barton for a law abiding man and a member of our police department you would think you wouldn't critize everyone that doesn't have your same opinion.

I too get 'tired' of all the negatives, but no, apparently everyone does NOT have the right to comment... I'm brand new here and only one out of 4 of my comments have been posted. My comments were not attacks on anyone, just comments regarding this current drama. Comments such as you can check other news agencies as they have reported that the Macon County Sheriff reported no other fingerprints than Kory's were found in the truck and I commented on the apparent extraordinary gas mileage he must get with that truck. I also wondered how many teens keep a completely full gas tank? No bother, this probably won't get through the censors either.

tiredofthebull, I agree 100% with you and after reading the update I am more confused now than before. The story has already changed and changed drastically. I thought he hid in the woods and watched the guy make the call and watched someone pick him up. Lucky for the boy the guy happened to take him right in an area he has hunted that is 6 hours away. What a lucky break. Non of us are saying this didnt happen Lindell, we are just saying what was printed was suspicious. We are all happy the young man is safe. And for us not saying our real names. Stating your real name when giving your opinion on something will usually end up in problems. Non of us want that. We are just questioning the facts that were printed, when the whole story comes out it might make more sense. But the second story is alot different than the 1st was so I will wait for the 3rd story to put the pieces together for myself.

Go be with your family. They need you way more than "us mentally challanged" individuals need our "goose gotten".

lindell,
2nd question - i'm not slanderous.... i call it as i see it.. i NEVER mentioned anyone's name, just commented on the events in the story...
i picked apart the STORY, not the young man... whether is was about him, me or anyone else...
I also made it clear that i was picking apart the events and the story.
take time to read my entire posts, not just enough to decide i don't believe it as I read it...
There is no slander. My points are valid questions.
They may or may not be true, but you yourself stated the truth isn't out....
To take this further, if the story is false, then so are my comments - so be it.. it was a bad story...
again, glad all are home safe and hope it doesn't happen again.
BUT THE STORY DOESN"T ADD UP!

If you what you posted on here was true, valid and not slanderous you would not have any fear for your safety and would use your real name like I did. Take care and enjoy your blogs.

First, I am glad Kory is safe. Make no mistake about that. I do not know any of the people involved.
I speak from personal experience with news media and how information gets messed with (misquoted, wrong info, etc.). Also with law enforcement that were less than forthcoming. And none involved any of the local ones (media/law).
That said, something just seems off. Certainly, we don't know all the facts as is usual with such things. But just from what I have read here, it leaves me with questions.
I'm not going to pick it apart as that isn't productive and I'm not making any judgements on those involved.
Hopefully this will all get taken care of and justice done.

Like everyone else, my thoughts and prayers go to the family.
To Lindell - if you don't want to "stir the pot" amongst us simpletons, don't insult people.
My claims are the story as posted by the media do not add up.
I've called no body stupid. I've called nobody challanged or blamed anyone of having a brain malfunction.
You put that out there on your own. I've noticed that people are quick to blast others on blogs because that can hide.
I dont give my real name becasue there are crazy criminals (obviously, Kory is a victim of one) in our community.
I would advise you if you don't want people to rise and pick apart a story, don't throw insults out there.
if you know the truth and you need to go help a hurt family, go do that.. don't take time out of your day to insult those who read a story and recognized it wasn't complete, true, or accurate....
I would hope a follow up telling the "REAL" story someday happens...

What I can't comprehend is the fact that so many people don't understand that this is in an investigative stage, therefore, not all details are going to be released to the public. "Inquiring (i.e. NOSY) minds want to know" every detail of the story, but for Kory's safety and for the future legal case against the idiot that abducted him, not all information can and should be released. If too much information is leaked, the guy can petition the court that his right to a fair trial has been compromised.
It's disappointing that there are so many doubting Thomases. Just be thankful Kory did whatever he had to do to escape. Way to go, Kory! You did great!

I think most of us said we are glad the boy is safe. We are just questioning what we read. If the right info was not to be released then maybe the whole thing should have been kept quiet till they were ready to give enough of the story for us malfunctioned brains to understand it. If this would have happened to someone else would the boys family be questioning what was wrote in the paper? I think they would. We didnt say it didnt happen, just wonder what actually happened.

I'M GLAD HE'S BACK HOME AND IF I WAS HELD AT GUNPOINT I WOULD FREEZE TO. ESPECIALLY IF I WAS UNARMED AND I SURE AS HECK WOULDN'T BE ABLE TO TEXT WHILE DRIVING AND NOT LOOKING.

They do not know the story and they may never know the story. Kory is all right and that is all that counts. The Wakefield family only needs to worry about there close friends that are there for them. Don't worry about the others. When something happens like this there is always 400 storys that go around. You always have the ones that stir the pot and ones that care. Kory is a good kid. I believe him! You all stay strong as a family and forget the rest.

a few more points -
First - Lindell B. i NEVER said Kory did anything.. i commented on how the story didn't add up.... YOU JUMPED to assume i implied Kory..
I know the media does not always have everything, but it is their job to sell newspapers...
2nd - Leadington does not need more police protection.. they need to redefine their patrol stratagies..
and do you really think the guy would have done it if he saw a patrol car sitting there?
He would have gone elsewhere...
Lindell - if you want us to know the truth, tell us...
otherwise, I'm glad Kory is home safe... best to him and his family..
don't judge us for our interpretation of the story as it was written.. if no one will correct it, that's how we will perceive it...
it's up to you... tell or don't tell...
until then, the DJ publishes the only truth we have access to.

Wouldn't a description of the perp be in order? Maybe just maybe someone around here knows him.
Also, the paper did say Mrs. Wakefield said "the incident made clear a need she will work to meet.
“We definitely need more police protection in that area"
Seems you could drive by every house in Leadington in about 15 minutes, not sure where you would put more protection. Maybe parents should be up and out of bed to see their kids get off to school safely.

Why do we question authorities and reporters. They tell what they need to tell and if they don't want a description out yet there is a reason, I'm sure. Kory's family has to be hurt over some of the articles people are sending. Heaven help anyone who has been thru an ordeal as this one. I just pray they catch the abductor. I have a grandson that plays football and I am very proud of these young men being so concerned for their friend they did all they could do in the search even though some things that they heard didn't pan out they all did their best. My prayers are with Kory and his family at this time as I'm sure it takes some time to recover from an incident such as this.

Uh, Lindell?
We questioned the facts as presented to us by multiple media source. Their reports came from the family and the police department.
You called us "challenged" and claimed we had "brain malfunctions" - hardly the same thing.
My new signature: I AM GLAD KORY IS HOME SAFE (since no one seemed to read that in my previous posts).

Let me clarify my statements about the media. I was making a general statement about all media sensationalizing stories, not the DJ specifically. The reporter of this article has had very limited information to go on at this point. This was for a reason. I want to thank all of those involved with Kory's safe return.
And for the record I have not, nor would I ever, give any information to the media about this incident. I did not investigate it and I was there simply to help the family.

For those of you that took offense to my observations of your comments; it is funny how you can be offended by an opinion when you are sharing your biased opinions of people you do not know as well. Now you know how it feels to be judged by others based solely on incomplete scribes on the internet.
Again, I hope this never happens to any one again but if it does I pray that it has a positive outcome like this one. But this can only happen if someone believes the victim involved.
Kory is home safe and the good police of this county will do everything possible to bring the perp to justice. That is all that matters.

Actually, KATRINA, you said “We definitely need more police protection in that area,” she said. I’m going to work on getting it.”
Someone in this commenting section interpretted that wrong, NOT the media. Unless you're telling us that you didn't say what the article actually quotes you as saying?
Did you even read the article? Or just the comments?
Ok, so you and Lindell are telling us we don't know all the facts, and according to Lindell we're mentally handicapped.
We're stating that the "facts" that YOU chose to release to the media don't make a whole lot of sense.
Let's hope the information that the investigators are learning help put the missing pieces together.
But as LCE pointed out, why aren't there alerts out there, so we, the public, can help bring this man to justice?
Once again, I AM glad your son is safe.

LET ME MAKE ONE THING CLEAR - I'M GLAD EVERYONE IS SAFE AND HOME. I AM NOT CALLING ANYONE A LIAR.
I AM QUESTIONING THE STORY AS PUT FORTH BY THE MEDIA... AND MR. BARTON FOR CALLING EVERYONE NAMES AND CLAIMING TO "KNOW THE REAL TRUTH", BUT OF COURSE HE IS NOT SHARING IT.
KARTRINA, I'M SO GLAD FOR YOU AND YOUR FAMILY TO BE BACK TOGETHER AND CANNOT IMAGINE WHAT YOU WENT THRU. I HOPE I NEVER HAVE TO AND HOPE YOU NEVER HAVE TO AGAIN.
I DO BELIEVE THE STORY AS WRITTEN DOES NOT ADD UP.
I DO NOT FEEL THE LEADINGTON POLICE DEPARTMENT IS A SHINING EXAMPLE OF LAW ENFORCEMENT ON A DAILY BASIS.
HOW CAN IT BE A GOOD DEPT. WHEN THE CHEIF HIMSELF IS UNDER INVESTIGATION FOR "ALLEGED" CRIMES...
IF THERE IS A KIDNAPPER WITH A GUN, I HOPE HE'S CAUGHT.

I totally agree Katrina, DON'T even waste your time with people like this. Our community would be better if we cared about others in the time that they need us the most, instead of acting out behind a screen name. I started praying from the minute I got the first call and then pulled into your driveway. The Paces are stll praying for you all, we love your family!!! He is an awesome man and he did the things he knew to do because he has more common sense that the people that want to talk about it.

First of all some of the comments left on here make me sick. You that dont think it is possible to text from your pocket DO NOT have a teenager, I have 2 and they can do it without looking, just ask one they do it in class all the time. Yes he is a football player and he plays on the line right next to my son, he is a big boy, but have you had a gunpointed at you lately or for that fact EVER? I am sure you don't have teens as I have stated because of a morning we are lucky to get them up so they can get dressed and get out the door. Do you really think he was ready for what he experienced that morning, I just pray this never happens to anyone in your family, because I will tell you as good friends as we are with this family it makes me sick, that you all have nothin better to do with your time, than to say it doesn't add up, it is an open case!!! MAYBE IN YOU FREE TIME THAT YOU HAVE YOU SHOULD GO TO MAC to become a POLICE OFFICER!

I can't believe y'all are arguing over my son being abducted. Does anyone one here have any idea what I went through. I am just thankful Kory made it back home. I LOVE YOU KORY!

Good grief. No one is questioning this young man's integrity!
I AM questioning the information that the police and family provided to the media. The same story here was broadcast on the television. So both the TV station and newspaper misinterpreted the information? Can you honestly look at this story with an impartial heart and say that the whole thing makes sense?
According to the updated info, "Investigators have a clearer picture of the facts". Why would they need a clearer picture if it already made sense to everyone?
Oh, and I have been online long enough to know not to provide my full name so anyone in the world can see it. But since you asked, my name is Darren. I am supposed to be working right now, so don't tell my boss! Superbiff OUT.

I have another question.. alderwomen Wakefield wants to increase police presence in the town.
First of all, was he abducted at MAC? That falls under Park Hills, not Leadington. or was he kidnapped in leadington? not sure on that one.
2nd, Ms. Wakefield wants more police... maybe if she got the city to stop issuing tickets as fast as they can write on US67 and watch their actual town, they might have been able to help.
Lastly, do you stop everyone that's walking and search them? You can't watch every corner every second of every day....
More police aren't the answer in this one... lock your doors, load your shotguns, and watch your neighbors and ask them to watch you.
Someone pulls a gun, I do believe in MO you are allowed to shoot back if you are truly in fear of your life...
get your conceal permit and protect yourself.. taxpayers cannot afford to pay for enough cops.. (wish they could).
most cities cannot pay for a good retirement for their cops, let alone add more cops to payroll

i take all stories with a grain of salt, but i do believe that a kidnapping in our county would bring out the best of our reporters and daily journal..
they would make space for the story and do their best to get any information that was shared..
this was an armed kidnapping, not the county fair...
again, the events don't add up.
why don't you fill us all in since you are so concerned with telling us how stupid we are for believing the paper...

Lindell,
Most of us do not use our real names because of the amount of crazy people in society today.. we use screen names to protect ourselves....
You of all people, being a cop, should understand this...
We are not all here to stir the pot, most of us, including myself feel there is a certin amount of information that has either been withheld or told wrong in this story..
nothing makes sense...
texting from a pocket.. crashing your truck in the woods and not running from the man with a gun, but sticking around to see a red truck a few minutes later..
come on.. it's not november.. there are leaves on the trees.. you can only see so many feet right now in the woods...
read the story as an unbiased reader and see what adds up..

Oh, and to TAD:
I just tried texting from my pocket. I ended up calling Brazil.
Now, I am not saying that it's impossible, but on my phone, I had to scroll through the contact list, find the person I wanted to text, select them, choose to compose a text message, THEN type the text. Once I did the first 4 steps, I was finally able to compose a semi-legible text message.
I think Matt Damon did the same thing in The Departed, and I remember thinking 'Man, he knows his phone TOO well.'
However, I can admit it is not outside the realm of possibility that he knew his phone well enough to address a text message to his girlfriend, read her response, then respond with the proper spelling, all while he was in his truck with a man that just kidnapped him and within the span of 13 minutes.
But once again - to TAD, Lindell and krystalkaiser-barton - I am NOT saying this incident didn't happen! I am simply saying NONE OF IT MAKES SENSE. That's it.

superbiff, since I do not know your real name, we can not control what the media presents to the public. There are always too many stories that get turned around. I take what I read and hear through the media with a grain of salt. The media wants to sensationalize the story to get the most attention possible. If you chose to believe that everything you read and hear is accurate, I saw an ad on craigslist.com for solid gold eggs laid by a prize rooster for sale for a steal at $100.00 each.
LCE, if criminals were all smart and did everything right we would have no need for the prisons that employ half of our county.
Again, if you do not understand the story you should question the media source first. Not saying they did not try to make an accurate report but there are numerous details that are not included in the article that make sense out of the situation. Reporters are human, have time and article space limitations.

I would apologize on this forum if it does turn out to be true. Reporters can only report what they are told. The account just does not add up, that is what people are commenting on. There is always, I think, the possibility that the gunman isn't the brightest bulb in the box. Why wasn't this gunman worried about being identified? He wasn't reported as masked. I would like to hear the full story too. If security needs to be beefed up, then we need to make changes in our lives. This is a quiet community, it saddens me to think that crime is on the rise here.

Lindell, by simply stating that the story provided does not make sense makes us "challenged" and have "malfunctioning brains"? Did anyone say that this incident did not happen?
You, however, are clearly stating that this newspaper did not accurately report the story they were told. If this were the case, shouldn't the person or persons that provided this information call or visit them immediately to correct it? Surely they have seen the article yeterday either in print or on the website - yet the allowed them to print the same information - inaccurately - for two days in a row?
Yes, I hope it doesn't happen to a member of my family - but I can guarantee I would be more careful that it was reported accurately!

If all you people believe that the newspapers and television news report everything they are told 100% accurately, you have obvious brain malfunctions. Yes, I was there for the aftermath and yes, I have first hand knowledge of the FACTS of the incident. But, for safety sake and out of respect for the family, I will not share it with you challenged folks who doubt this happened. All I can say is that I hope someone, anyone, believes you when tragedy strikes your family. Get a life instead of blogging on situations you DO NOT understand.

I promise all the facts have not been brought out in this case and yes it would be very easy to text from inside your pocket. We don't know the entire story here and if the police are smart they wont reveal all the facts. I think if you want the inside information you need to join the police department but based on most of your intelligent levels i don't think that is possible.

krystalkaiser-barton, I don't know much about investigative reporting, but it would seem to me that the facts of this story would come from a reporter interviewing or getting a statement from the police department, or possibly the family, involved. Am I wrong to assume this?
So you're saying this reporter wrote down the wrong facts and reported them as such during the course of two days and two stories?
Or you're saying you KNOW the facts were purposely misreported (or provided incorrectly to the reporter)?
But I will agree with your one and only point - these facts did not happen as they were reported, but I don't think that the reporter did anything but report on what they were told.
So who is misleading us here? The young man? The family (that happens to be on the influential board of alderman of the town)? The police department (of the town that this young man has relatives on)?
Like I said - regardless of any of this, I am glad this young man is now home safe. Let's just hope these new facts don't cast a shadow of doubt on him, his family, or the police department.
Time will tell.

Somethings strange around here. I smell a fish!!! Why would a kidnapper allow an abducted victim to keep their cell phone? From the size of this young man, I think a kidnapper would have chosen an easier target. If the victim wrecked on purpose, don't you think a gun wielding maniac would have used it in retaliation? Things just don't add up in this story.
LCE posted on Wednesday, September 17th, 2008 at 9:37 am
I think a lot in this story does not add up. I'd like to know just how he managed to text a message to anybody with a gun on him. Who holds a gun on somebody and not watch their every single move? How could he get his hand into his pocket, had to be the left pocket, sitting down in a truck? And how did he know his gf's responce without reading it? Why did he stop texting only after 2 times? Statistics show that this kid, a 300 lb. football player is NOT the typical victim of a crime. Crime victims are smaller, the elderly, disabled, someone who would not be as able to put up a fight. Sorry, folks, but this just does not add up to me either. I have a lot of questions about this whole story.

Ok, what about this seems strange?
He crashed his truck, ran into the woods, but stuck around long enough to watch this man use his cell phone, AND waited around to see a red vehicle pick him up? And this ride arrived within a few minutes, which would mean he knew someone VERY close to the scene where the truck was crashed?
I'm not trying to cast doubt on this young man's story - we have no reason not to believe him.
But something about those statements just doesn't make sense to me.
