Friday Club holds meeting

The Friday Club GFWC of Missouri held its September brunch meeting on Friday, September 19, 2008 at Follis Hall. The hostesses for the brunch were Mary Henson, Janet Ward, Glenda Huffman and Margaret Miller. Ilerea Hamilton gave the blessing before the members enjoyed a wonderful array of brunch casseroles, fruit in a melon basket, pastry and a loaf cake. Tea and coffee provided by the hostesses.

The meeting was called to order by President Phyllis Caulson, and began with the pledge to the United States and Missouri flags. The members present were: Joann Banks, Nancy Basden, Frances Branum, Mary Brotherton, Jean Bryson, Phyllis Caulson, Conita Follis, Karen Fulton, Ilerea Hamilton, Mary Henson, Linda Hogan, Glenda Huffman, Catherine Ivy, Carolyn Kegley, Virginia Kinder, Margaret Miller, Radha Rao, Jean Roy, Betty Schmale and Janet Ward.

Mary Henson gave a devotional on Little House on the Freeway. Reading of the minutes by Margaret Miller was approved as read. Treasurers report was given by Betty Schmale. Correspondence was shared with all members. Program leader, Mary Brotherton introduced Bill Hoover who gave a very interesting and informative program on Alzheimer’s Disease. He urged any one who is a caregiver for an Alzheimer’s patient to try to relax and go with the flow; laugh if possible. This will make it easier. This disease causes 1/4 of the deaths among adults. There are over 5 million Alzheimer’s patients in this country with 7,200 in Southeast Missouri, 66,000 in the St. Louis area.  One estimate shows 100 million by 2050. There are 45 million caregivers in this country. There is a 5 percent chance of a child of an Alzheimer patient will also have this dreaded disease.
