Fredericktown received the opening kickoff. On the first play from scrimmage, Quarterback A.P. Lewandowski had a long run negated by a holding penalty. Joey Lewandowski took the ball on the next play and went 31 yards to the six yard line. On the next play, he scored. Ryan Gifford’s PAT made it 7-0 with 10:31 to go in the first quarter.
After the Eagles punted, the Cats began on their 31. Another holding penalty stymied the drive, and FHS had to punt.
The Cats recovered an East Prairie fumble at the three yard line and Joey Lewandowski scored on the next play. It was 14-0 with 5:51 to go in the first quarter.
After the kickoff, the Eagles went 62 yards on ten plays and took the ball into the end zone with 35 seconds left in the quarter. It was 14-7.
The Cats came right back, marching down the field on the ground, and capping off an 8-4-yard drive with a 28-yard pass from A.P. Lewandowski to Jon O’Neal. The PAT was wide, left. It was 20-7 with 8:21 to go in the half.
On the next East Prairie drive, the Cats recovered another fumble, but one official overturned the call and gave the ball back to the Eagles. They took advantage of their good fortune and went 69 yards on 13 plays, converting a fourth and goal for a score. The PAT was blocked and it was 20-13 with 1:38 to play in the half.
The Cats took the kickoff and with little time left on the clock, Coach Shannon Henson had the option of trying to score or going into halftime with a 7-point lead. He chose the former, and it was a good thing. On the second play from scrimmage, Joey Lewandowski went 83 yards for a touchdown. After the kickoff, East Prairie completed a short pass, and the receiver fumbled. Jacob Farmer scooped the ball up for the Cats and went 10 yards for another score. In just over a minute, the two teams combined for three scores. More importantly, in just 28 seconds, the Cats increased their lead from 20-13 to 33-13. Farmer’s score came with 27 seconds left in the half, and East Prairie kneeled on the ball as the half expired.
More penalties and and two straight turnovers plagued the Cats in the second half. The Eagles scored on a fumble recovery with two seconds left in the third quarter. They scored again after another fumble and trailed just 33-25 with 10:41 to play in the game.
Fredericktown started at its 25 and drove the length of the field. On fourth and goal fromthe one, The Cats dove for the end zone and fumbled, but Gifford recovered for the score. It was 40-25, following the PAT.
East Prairie took over with 6:31 to go in the game, and the Eagles were not ready to concede anything. They went 65 yards on a 12-play drive, which consumed five minutes. It was 40-32, Cats with 1:22 to play.
East Prairie went for an onside kick and recovered the ball at midfield with 1:19 to play. A questionable pass interference penalty gave the Eagles the ball at the Cats 33. They got another first down at the 23 with 56.2 seconds left. From there, the FHS defense clamped down. A short pass left the Eagles receiver in bounds with the clock ticking away. The Eagles spiked the ball to stop the clock with 34.7 left. On third down down, a pass fell incomplete. The same thing happened on fourth and nine from FHS 22.
A.P. Lewandowski need only to kneel down with the ball, and the game was over.
Joey Lewandowski was able to take advantage of some strong work by the FHS offensive line, and he set a new FHS single-game record with 307 yards rushing on 25 carries. Zach Sohn had 34 yards on six carries. A.P. Lewandowski completed four of six passes for 59 yards. O’Neal and Sohn each had two receptions.
On defense, Adam Daniels led with 12 tackles. Farmer had one of the Cats four fumble recoveries (The others were by Krueger, Sohn, and Franks) and a touchdown.
