BISMARCK — The two division leaders of the MAAA Conference squared off Monday night in a match that could well have great impact on the seeding of the conference tournament which is still two weeks off. The Bismarck Indians behind the power game of their middle hitter Brooke Taylor were able to defeat the Large-School leading Ste. Genevieve Hunters in a come-from-behind three game match, 19-25, 25-21, 26-24.
Taylor fought off the Hunters blocking and defensive digs to hammer down 28 kills in the match. Her last four became the most important for Bismarck fans.
Following a Bismarck time-out, with the third game score 22-19 in favor of the Hunters, Ste. Genevieve served the ball out for their only second service error in the match. The missed serve proved to be momentous as it brought Taylor to the front row for Bismarck.
Allison Gettinger nailed down her sixth kill in the third game to give the serve back to the Hunters, but Taylor was able to put one away to match it. A missed serve by Bismarck made it match point for the Hunters at 24-22. The needed point would never come.
Taylor hammered down another kill, and a missed attack into the net by the Hunters tied the game to make it a two-point race for the win. Bismarck continued to set their ace, and Taylor delivered again to give the Indians the lead, but it would be the soft touch that would win the game as Taylor found an open spot on the very next play to tap the ball to the floor.
The Hunters had trouble setting the ball early in game one and they fell behind as Megan Counts served the Lady Indians to a 10-6 lead. Kristen Faulkner destroyed Bismarck’s serve receive with three straight aces in serving the Hunters to their first lead at 14-13.
The two teams played even until the Hunters took a mini-lead of 20-18, and Coach Paula AuBuchon called time to hopefully stop the game from getting away from the Lady Indians. Bismarck’s serve receive was still malfunctioning and the Hunters jumped to a 23-19 score producing hasty time-out by AuBuchon.
Tisha Meyer served out the last two points with Liz Huck making a stuff block of a Bismarck spike for the win.
Game two saw both teams again battling point for point until Balee Lorenz served the Lady Indians to a 17-13 lead aided by the net play of Taylor.
The Hunters called time to stop any runaway by the home team, and the strategy worked as they were bale to pull to within one at 20-19, causing Bismarck to call time. The Hunters tied the game at 21-21, but Taylor would make one of her four backcourt kills to break serve and in the process moved up to the front row to make another on the next play.
With the score 23-21, Ste. Genevieve used their second time-out, but this time it would not have any affect. Harley Cadwell served an ace to make it game point, and then served a hard serve that forced the Hunters to only send back a free ball, and with the attack, Taylor polished off the game with her 19th kill.
Cadwell was also Bismarck’s second attack leader with five kills and a stuff block, and along with Taylor, the two found the sets made by Lorenz more than adequate. Lorenz made 27 assists in the match.
Ste. Genevieve held the lead for most of the third game with Holley Fox and Gettinger hammering kill after kill while Taylor was stuck in the back row. The Hunters used a two setter system with Meyer and Faulkner trading off, sometimes even on the very same point.
Fox finished the night with nine kills and four stuff blocks, and Gettinger and Meyer each had seven kills. Faulkner led the Hunters in service points with nine, and Lorenz led Bismarck in serving with 10 points, and Tori Henson was next with seven.
Bismarck is now 18-2-3 and will try to improve their Small-School conference record of 6-0 when they will play at Kingston this evening. Ste. Genevieve is 13-5-4 and will host North County at the same time in a Large-School contest.
