FARMINGTON — The Farmington Knightettes and Potosi Lady Trojans were both seeking their first conference win Tuesday night. The Knightettes were able to establish their offense consistently to take a 25-11, 25-13 win.
Farmington recorded 21 kills to Potosi’s 11, and the Lady Trojans spent a good part of the game just trying to keep the ball in play from the offensive attacks by the Knightettes. Ashley Jenson made the attack game possible with 16 assists
Farmington’s serving had a lot to do with Potosi having trouble getting their offense in sync. The Knightettes’ sharp serves often created bad passes by the Lady Trojans resulting in a free ball that gave Farmington the offensive opportunity on serve.
As if putting an exclamation point to each game, Molly Barnes served an ace to end game one, and Cassie Garcilaso hit a net ball that fell to the floor on Potosi’s side for an ace to end game two.
Potosi led the first game until an ace by Garcilaso gave the Knightettes their first lead at 6-5. The Lady Trojans matched broken serves with Farmington until Ashley Jenson, with a powering jump, serve served four straight points for the home team to take a lead the Knightettes would never relinquish.
When libero player Chelsea Pratt served Farmington to an 18-10 lead, Potosi called time to halt the runaway, but two points later at 19-11, Barnes served out the game.
The same game play as in game one started out game two with Farmington pounding the ball with hard spikes and Potosi constantly trying to defend the attacks. The Knightettes rolled out to a 9-4 lead, forcing Potosi to call time to refocus.
Potosi was able to stop any scoring streaks on serve by the Knightettes as Casey Nivens powered down two kills to match the two she had in game one, and Megan Rolens made all four of her kills in the second game to keep Farmington to only gaining one or two points on serve each time.
The Lady Trojans were only able to score a total of two points on serve in game one and only three points on serve in game two. Whitney and Courtney Huering combined for eight kills in game one for Farmington.
In game two it was kill by committee as the Knightettes made 10 kills with Whitney Heuring and Barnes leading the way with two each. The Knightettes did not have a server serve more than two points on their turn until Garcilaso served the last three points for the win.
Farmington, 12-7-1 overall and 1-1 in conference, will travel to Central on Thursday for another conference match-up. Potosi, 9-11 overall and 0-2 in conference, will host Ste. Genevieve on Thursday.
