Thursday's Sports in Brief

Nearly half the countries that participated in the Beijing Olympics failed to tell organizers where their athletes were so they could be drug tested outside of competition.

A report issued Thursday by independent observers for the World Anti-Doping Agency said 102 of 205 countries represented did not provide Olympic officials with information about their athletes’ whereabouts.

It is each country’s responsibility to notify testers of its athletes’ whereabouts during the games. The countries were not reprimanded during the games but were to receive written notification afterward.

Though one violation of the rule is normally not considered a doping violation, observers said the number of non-conforming countries was alarming.

They lauded the increased number of overall tests (4,770), blood tests (969) and tests for EPO (817) and human growth hormone (471), along with some very specifically targeted tests.

NFL

IRVING, Texas (AP)
— Troubled cornerback Adam “Pacman” Jones won’t be disciplined by the Dallas Cowboys for a scuffle with his bodyguard that team owner Jerry Jones said resulted from joking banter that got out of hand and was quickly settled.

“They were literally kidding each other,” Jerry Jones said Thursday. “They were jiving around ... and all of a sudden one of them starting saying some things, and here you go.”

Dallas police were called to an upscale downtown hotel because of the disturbance late Tuesday night. No charges were filed.

While not planning any discipline for Adam Jones, Jerry Jones acknowledged that he was “very disappointed in that we’re having to deal with this.”

It remained unclear if the NFL planned any discipline.

BASEBALL

NAGUA, Dominican Republic (AP)
— New York Mets pitcher Ambiorix Burgos will be jailed for three months while awaiting trial for a hit-and-run accident that killed two women.

The 24-year-old reliever told The Associated Press that a Dominican judge ordered him to remain behind bars Wednesday night out of concerns for his safety.

“I am going to come out of this fine because my conscience is clear, and I’m not worried this will affect my career because I haven’t done anything,” he said in the jailhouse interview.

Burgos is accused of abandoning the victims of the Sept. 30 accident and fleeing, charges that can carry six months to two years in prison. He disappeared after the accident but turned himself in Tuesday.

HOCKEY

DETROIT (AP)
— The Detroit Red Wings hoisted an 11th Stanley Cup banner to the rafters Thursday night at Joe Louis Arena before their opener against the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Gordie Howe and other former Red Wings passed the white banner with red stitching to current standouts such as Nicklas Lidstrom on the ice in a pregame ceremony.

The Stanley Cup was on display, atop a puck-shaped pedestal, along with six other trophies Detroit won last season.

A sold-out crowd cheered the loudest for vice president Steve Yzerman — who helped the Red Wings win three Cups — general manager Ken Holland, coach Mike Babcock, goaltender Chris Osgood and Lidstrom.

Detroit is on a quest to be the first to repeat as Stanley Cup champions since doing it in 1998.

MINDEN, Nev. (AP) — Clint Malarchuk, the former NHL goalie best known for having his jugular vein slashed by a skate in a 1989 game with Buffalo, is recovering after accidentally shooting himself in the chin with a rifle.

Wife Christy told sheriff’s deputies that the .22-caliber rifle discharged after her husband placed the butt on the ground between his legs. He had been shooting rabbits.

The 47-year-old former player, now a goalie coach with the Columbus Blue Jackets, was flown by helicopter to a Reno hospital for treatment Tuesday.

GOLF

SAN ANTONIO (AP)
— Australia’s Nathan Green shot an 8-under 62 on Thursday to take a two-stroke lead over Olin Browne and Paul Claxton in the Texas Open.

Green, winless in three seasons on the PGA Tour, birdied nine of the first 16 holes before dropping a stroke on the par-3 17th and closing with a par.

DANVILLE, Calif. (AP) — Michele Redman and Sweden’s Maria Hjorth shot 6-under 66s on Thursday to share the first-round lead in the LPGA Tour’s Longs Drugs Challenge.

Redman and Hjorth both had seven birdies and a bogey on a sunny day at Blackhawk Country Club. In-Kyung Kim and Mikaela Parmlid were tied for second at 67.
