Bennett named Ste. Genevieve chief
Sunday, October 12, 2008
The man who ran against St. Francois County Sheriff Dan Bullock in the August primary election has just been named the Ste. Genevieve police chief.
Eric P. Bennett was sworn in last week after the city board approved him as the new chief. According to the Ste. Genevieve Herald, the post had been vacant since April when former Chief Dale Newman’s employment was terminated by a six-to-two vote by the council.
Until last week when he accepted the position, Bennett was the criminal investigator for the St. Francois County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office. He had worked there since 2003. Prosecutor Wendy Wexler Horn hopes to hire a new investigator within the next couple of weeks.
Bennett graduated from the Mineral Area Law Enforcement Academy in 1999 when he was 20. He was commissioned as an officer in April 2000.
He worked a short time for the Bismarck Police Department and two years for the Ste. Genevieve Police Department. He worked about a year and a half for the Mineral Area Drug Task Force before working for the prosecutor’s office.
His father, Stormy Bennett, has been a St. Francois County detective and currently works for the Ste. Genevieve County Sheriff’s Department.

Wow, tiredofthebull, you get offended quite easily. First of all, please tell me how responsibilities such as investigating cases from prosecution, and arresting and interviewing suspects does not classify him as a "Cop". Secondly, he does not need to rely on the "good ole boy cologne" becuase he is great at what he does and has more respect, integrity and ambition than most of your elected St. Francois County officials. Lastly, please spell check your comment before implying that I am incompetent; Chief (and barely) are misspelled. . .lol

Ste Gen Resident - YOU DO THE MATH!!! He has worked for the attorney's office, NOT AS A COP since 2003.
I must agree with MBSER - 3 or 4 years experience and he's running a police department...
I smell some good old boy cologne somewhere....
When you receive your commission doesn't mean you earn experience for the whole time you carry it.
The world the police deal with is closly related to the attorney's office, but completly different.
I'm sure he was a good cop, but how is he with a budget, with politics, with answering to dozens of different opinions???
Where is his experience in that?
Again, I'm glad I do not live in Ste. Genevieve... Can't read and the police cheif is barly out of high school

Wow, mbser, you should re-read the article or work on your math skills. The article clearly stated that his first commissioned law enforcement position began in 2000. I'm glad that our city council saw the ambition and integrity that Eric has to offer.
