PARK HILLS — Central fifth grade teacher Melissa Norris doesn’t really like surprises. Knowing that, Central West Elementary Principal Keith Groom had a hard decision to make. He knew in advance that Norris was going to be honored by OfficeMax as part of the “A Day Made Better” program. To top off his dilemma OfficeMax employees were scheduled to surprise Norris in her classroom with complimentary classroom supplies on the say day that teachers were dressing up as super heroes for homecoming.
“I knew they were going to be taking some pictures of her so I did ask her ahead of time what she planned on dressing up as,” Groom admitted. “I didn’t tell her anything else though.”
The principal said the end result was his teacher being very surprised when they walked into her classroom and told her she was being honored.
In 2007 OfficeMax developed “A Day Made Better” as an annual one-day event that rewards more than 1,200 teachers nationwide with over $1,000 in classroom supplies.
“I received an e-mail over the summer from OfficeMax about this program,” Groom said. “There was a nomination form attached that I could use for one of my teachers. I have several great teachers here and it was a very difficult decision. Melissa Norris stood out because of her attention to detail and because she is always willing to lend a hand when asked.”
Groom said Norris blushed from the attention she was getting when OfficeMax arrived with the supplies.
“I think she was a bit overwhelmed,” he said. “It took two people to carry the box of supplies. I’m very happy for her because she is very deserving of this.”
