POTOSI — Potosi City Park was the sight of a cross country extravaganza on Saturday as the Potosi Invitational Meet was held in conjunction with the MAAA Conference Meet. Twenty-two different schools were represented by 50 teams from high school varsity to middle school teams for both boys and girls, with a total of 525 runners entered in the five races.

The Potosi Trojans won both high school varsity meets for the boys, and the Ste. Genevieve Hunters won both of the girls meets. Places and times for the race were used for each meet. Team points were composed by adding the place each runner finished in for the first five runners for that team, and places for any individual runners who did not have a team represented were dropped in computing the team scores.

The top 30 runners medaled in the Potosi Meet for both the boys and girls races (see list below). The top nine conference runners earned All-Conference honors.

Only four schools had teams entered in the Conference Meet with six schools having runner representation.

Boys —

The Trojans scored 45 points for first-place in the Invitational, which turned into 21 points to win first in the conference meet. Notre Dame came in second with 47 points and Festus was third at 52.

Jacob Swearingen for Potosi took first place honors in the boys race with a time of 16:08.7, just nine seconds ahead of teammate Nick Niggemann. Wynn McClellan of Notre Dame came in third 33 seconds later.

Erich Diesel of Ste. Genevieve placed eighth overall which was good enough for third in the conference meet.

Farmington took second in the conference with a score of 52, and they were fourth in the Potosi meet with a score of 127.

Those winning All-Conference honors were Swearingen, Niggemann, Diesel, and Justin Doss, Devin Hampton, and Jacob Mathis of Potosi, Jeff Kostedt and Caleb Sutton of Arcadia Valley and Colton Wooldridge of Farmington.

Girls —

The Ste. Genevieve Hunters finished with a score of 43 to take first place in the girls meet, and they totaled a perfect score of 15 in the  conference meet. Festus was second at 59, and Cape Central was third at 85.

North County finished seventh in the Potosi Meet with a score of 180, but when all of the non-conference places were removed they finished tied with Farmington (8th with 196 points) at 61 points apiece. The tiebreaker went to the team that had the best sixth-girl finish

Little did Cassidy Whitener of Farmington know that when she crossed the finish line in 50th place, it would end up giving her team second place.

Alyssa Allison of Festus won the overall meet with a time of 19:31.53. Mary Dohogne of Cape Central was second and Sarah White of Potosi took third with a time of 20:17.

White’s third-place finish was first among the conference runners. Ste. Genevieve’s first five runners were the next conference finishers with Jennifer Bauman leading the way at 20:40.8. Lydia Huelskamp, Ashley Brewster, Nicole Rottler and Linzie Bauer followed in order. Also claiming All-Conference honors were Justine Allison of Farmington, Holly Shilly of Ste. Genevieve and Whitney Welch of North County.
