Missouri Paranormal Research completes investigation of Caledonia Wine Cottage

CALEDONIA — On Oct. 11 the Missouri Paranormal Research (MPR) group conducted its second investigation at the Caledonia Wine Cottage. Firsthand accounts of unexplainable flying objects, voices from unknown origins and the appearance of a shadow figure resembling a Civil War soldier first led the group to the historic landmark in August. During that investigation several team members reported activity that was unexplainable.

Greg Myers, the president of MPR, had a firsthand experience with an unknown entity during his overnight stay.

“On my first night’s stay, I didn't have to go look for the haunting ... the haunting found me,” Myers said.

He said he was starting to fall asleep in the bed and breakfast’s Cottage Room when he heard the door knob rattle suddenly. The noise awakened Myers. He saw his room door partially open.

“The door then closed on its own,” he said.

He said he saw a small rocking chair in the room rock on its own. At the same time the temperature in the room dropped several degrees.

Sandy Oates, an investigator with MPR, was sleeping in the room across the hall. The commotion in Myers’ room caused her to also awaken. She claims to have heard several voices coming from the downstairs, which was empty and locked.

During both investigations the team used a new paranormal detection device called the Ovilus. The device utilizes an Environmental Communications Mode (ECM). Environmental Communications Mode measures various energies that are believed to be manipulated by ghosts. The device converts the energy into speech.

According to the manufacturer, communication is based on a 512 word vocabulary that is matched to the environmental readings. The Ovilus has seven modes of operation.

“Even experimental equipment we brought in for field testing turned out to produce valuable evidence about the haunting itself,” he said. “At the same time the haunting helped validate the validity and usefulness of our experimental equipment."

 During the October investigation Myers used the device as he directed questions to whatever supernatural entity might be present. At one point the device indicated that the entity wanted to be left alone as the word “rest” was translated.

In addition to the Ovilus, video cameras utilizing night vision technology, digital cameras, voice recorders and motion alarms were used during the investigations.

“After review and analysis of our collected material which included hours of video, audio and hundreds of photographs, we could conclude that it is a very haunted location,” Myers said.  “Although nothing visual was captured, we did capture a significant amount of Electronic Voice Phenomena (EVP) or what you can call the disembodied voices from the dead.”

During a previous visit to the bed and breakfast, the owners claimed a family said their young daughter was talking to someone that no one else could see.

“When she was asked who she was talking to, she told her parents ‘the little girl named Erica,’” Myers said. “During our investigation we captured a disembodied voice saying the name Erica.”
