ST. LOUIS — The Mineral Area College basketball teams played a doubleheader Tuesday night against the newly-named Florissant Valley Fury and won both ends of the dual meet.
The Lady Cardinals played first and with Gretchen Gaskin leading the way with 18 points, they won their game 65-55. Sherry Glennie scored 13 points and Caitlin Shadbolt had 11.
In the nightcap, the Cardinals struggled early with turnovers, but corrected the situation at the half to win the game going away, 78-58. MAC had 12 turnovers in the first half and committed only four in the final 20 minutes. Mike Stoval, one of MAC’s top scorers, left the game with only two points after one minute of play due to injury.
Flo Valley jumped out to the early lead and held their greatest lead at 15-8, seven minutes into the game. A three-ball by Tonye Smith started the Cardinals on the minor comeback, and three free throws and a basket by Sean Scott gave Mineral Area the lead as MAC’s defense held the Fury scoreless during the run.
Both teams had trouble with ball control with 23 turnovers between them, but what became very apparent was the fact that the Fury was ineffectual free throw . The Fury was 1-6 going down the stretch in the first half, but would continue their inaccuracy at the line in the second half to end up 7-23 on the night.
The Cardinals again trailed after their first lead, until just before the half they were able to tie the game again at 32-32, and a free throw by scoring leader Carlton Guyton, gave the Cardinals their second lead at the half, and they would never trail again. Guyton finished with 14 points.
The start of the second half was all Mineral Area as they quickly jumped out to a 40-33 lead on three straight buckets by Gerald Fulton, Eric McCrary and Korey McDaniel. The Fury gave chase with the help of their leading scorer Jeron Strickland, who scored all of their first seven points in the half. Strickland led both teams in scoring with 28 points.
The Fury closed to 44-42, but a basket by Al Rapier was followed by a steal and a quick basket by Guyton. Jeremy Felton and Fulton made back-to-back buckets to give the Cardinals their first double-digit lead at 58-48.
The Cardinals ran away with the game after McCrary made an offensive rebound and fed Guyton on the perimeter for a three. From that point, MAC went on to outscore the Fury 16-6 down the stretch with Smith hitting another three, and Fulton and Guyton having a pair of baskets.
The Cardinals are 2-1 and will play this Saturday at home against John A. Logan at 8 p.m. following the Regional volleyball championship and the Lady Cardinals basketball game against Seward County.
