Potosi's Swearingen wins second state championship

JEFFERSON CITY — The Missouri State High School Championships were held for cross country on Saturday at the Oak Hills Golf Center in Jefferson City, and the first runner to cross the finish line was Jacob Swearingen of Potosi. Swearingen, whose final time of 15:38 was only one-tenth of a second off of the Class 3 state record held by Potosi’s Josh Thebeau in 2006.
Swearingen led the race from start to finish and crossed the finish line nearly a half-minute before second-place Maksim Korolev from Harrisonville. Potosi’s Nick Niggemann placed third with a time of 16:12.
Swearingen’s win was the second in a row for the senior runner after winning the Class 3 state championship in 2007 as well. It marked the fourth year in a row that a Potosi runner has won the boys championship and the fifth time in the past six years.
The Potosi Trojans, which had won the Class 3 meet the past three years in a row and five times in the past seven years, finished third this year behind West Plains and Cape-Notre Dame. The Trojans finished with a team total of 78 points, West Plains had 39 and Cape-Notre Dame had 63.
Potosi coach Steve Davis was not disappointed with his team’s results. “We’ve won the past years, but this year we were wondering if we would even have a team. Getting third is exciting for us,” said Davis.
Freshman Justin Doss finished 44th, with Devin Hampton coming in 47th and Jacob Mathis 54th.
Farmington’s Colton Wooldridge gave an outstanding effort in trying to make All-State honors. Wooldridge, a sophomore, finished one place out at 26th with a time of 17:10. The first 25 finishers in each race medal with All-State honors.
The Ste. Genevieve Dragons had two runners in the Class 3 race and both made All-State. Seniors Corey Samples and Erich Diesel finished 17th and 21st respectively with times of 16:56 and 16:58.
The Ste. Genevieve Hunters placed fourth as a team in the Class 3 girls race. West Plains took first place with Kearney and Festus, second and third. Alyssa Allison, from Festus, came in first with a time of 18:59, and Sarah White, a sophomore from Potosi, finished fifth with a time of 19:38. The top four runners were all seniors.
Jennifer Bauman was the Hunters’ first runner to cross the finish line. Bauman took 15th with a time of 20:17, Lydia Huelskamp was 19th at 20:28 and Nicole Rottler finished 25th at 20:41 with all three runners making All-State. Ashley Brewster came in 40th, Linzie Bauer placed 68th, Paige Samples came in 98th and Holly Schilly was 104th.
The Hunters have won the state championship as a team in Class 2 in 2004 and 2005, and took fourth in Class 3 in 2006 with a second-place finish last year.
North County’s lone representative was freshman Alissah Dickey. Dickey placed 83rd with a time of 22:02.
The State Meet consists of four Classes with a boys and girls race in each. Fifteen runners from each of the eight districts are entered in the state race along with runners from the top two teams (5-7 members each) who did not finish in the top 15 of their district. Each race had approximately 160 runners.
In the Class 2 boys race, the Arcadia Valley Tigers made the school’s first-ever appearance as a team in the State meet. The team finished ninth with 240 points out of the 16 teams in their race. Herculaneum came in first with a score of 41, with St. Pius (Kansas City) placing second at 84.
The Tigers had two runners make All-State with Jeff Kostedt placing sixth at 17:33, and Caleb Sutton came in 21st with a time of 17:52. Tyler Compton, of Buffalo, won the race with a time of 16:44.
Alvan Poole finished in 80th place, Drake Ackley was 104th and Jimmy Morey came in 145th for Arcadia Valley.
