City plans to seed new soccer field
Camp hopes grass will get a head start

DESLOGE — Desloge City Administrator Greg Camp is optimistic that the city’s new soccer field at the corner of Walnut and Harding will be seeded by the first part of December. Just last month Camp didn’t think the seeding would get done until the spring, but now he has had a change of heart.

“I was talking with Gary Momot (maintenance department supervisor) about trying to go ahead and get this seeded,” Camp said. “He thinks that if we go ahead and get it seeded by the first of December, at least the snow moisture will soak the seed into the ground. If we get some warm days it will give the grass a head start in front of the weeds. If the weeds set in before we get grass, it’s going to take that much longer to get a turf established.”

Camp said he is hoping for the same time frame as when the city reseeded at Brightwell Park last year.

“We seeded at Brightwell in October and November,” he said. “We did some reseeding in the spring and by May we had kids playing on it. It’s possible the soccer field could be ready to play on by June. We are shooting for the same type of schedule. Keep your fingers crossed.”

He said John King (King’s Construction) was hauling top soil to the field last week.

“He is working at a feverish pace,” Camp said. “He is doing everything he can to try to get the field ready for seeding.”

Desloge awarded a $71,580  contract to King’s Construction for the work on the soccer field in May.

Once work is done on the first field, the city plans to construct a second field that will run end-to-end with the first field.

In addition to the soccer field, a terrace parking lot is also being constructed that will overlook the field. The parking lot will be large enough to accommodate 50 vehicles.

To ward 3: You need to attend some of your cities meetings!! You have all your facts wrong! Yes, I think also that we should have a soccer field in Bonne Terre and one that doesn't double as a baseball field at that! However, the park benches were not 5,000.00 sorry, try about triple that! Do I think we need them all? NO! But where you really have your facts wrong is where you said all the money they spent on the pool is so a certain council woman could work in the summers is ridiculous! First off, she just had heartattack so back off and secondly, she use to run the pool years ago before she was on the council... Some one new ran it this year....Me! Some parents abuse our hours but other than that it is a great place for families to spend a hot day together for CHEAP! Sorry that we want to spend money to keep it looking nice. No it did't this summer but that is because it needs a new EVERYTHING so we did what we could to get by this summer. If were going cheap, want to come do some charity work?

With times the way they are, why is it government should even provide entertainment and exercise? Like zipline said, go play in the yard or down on the ballfield away from the soccer moms.

Look at the youth football league fields. They are in great shape. Did the city do anything for that program? The volunteers for that program did what people are supposed to do....gave their time, money, and hard work and did it themselves without going to the government for help. More like a "user tax". Those who participate or have an interest, invest your own money, time, and effort for the youngsters.

One of the major problems in this country, people want the government to do everything for them.

And why should my taxes pay for a soccer field. How about the kids play in their yard. We are taxed to death in this country now, we don't need to pay for anything else. If you want your child to have a soccer park, then be my guest and pay for one with your own money.

congradulations Desloge, great job! You know a man gives the city of Bonne Terre a brand new nice City hall, a nice ballfeild, all new furniture. Wow and then the city kicks out the kids. The city actually tells the kids if you want to play soccer then you have to get out of town. How arrogant, It is unbeleivable what the current mayor and council is doing. come election time this wont be forgotten. lets dont forget this soccer deal, lets dont forget the $5000 park benches that no one will ever sit on, lets don"t forget the $3000 stripping machine, lets dont forget nothing was done for over 600 kids playing baseball with destroyed dugouts and gravel dirt, Lets dont forget the $50,000 swimming pool so the city Council lady has a place to work in the summer, Lets dont forget how arrogant and self serving politicians we have. It is sickening that people give to the city and they sit there and forget the people that elected them. Vote them out!!!

Desloge and Park Hills have soccer fields but Bonne Terre city counsel sends theirs out of the city. I don't even like soccer but there sure seems to be a lot of kids that do. I'm all for anything that gets kids out of the house to exercise and have some fun. It's too bad Bonne Terre can't give them somewhere of their own to do it like every other town around.
