A Bismarck man is facing serious charges after police say he assaulted his father.

Joshua Neel, 24, has been charged in Washington County with second-degree domestic assault, armed criminal action, second-degree assault on a law enforcement officer, resisting arrest and second-degree property damage.

According to court records, Neel got into a dispute with his father, William, on Dec. 12 and threw his father into a lamp, causing the lamp to be damaged. Witnesses say Neel then went to the kitchen and got a knife. When his father attempted to stop Neel from cutting himself, Neel cut his father across the palm of his hand leaving about a three-inch laceration.

Police say Neel fled the scene and was found in the trunk of a car located in the garage of the residence. Neel again fled from police, jumped a fence, ran through an adjoining yard and then back inside the family residence where he then locked the front door. Two deputies entered the residence and placed him under arrest.

While a deputy was trying to walk him outside to the patrol car, he attempted to use his body to throw her through the glass door. The deputy suffered a severe cut to her finger and it broke two of her fingernails off. The cut required immediately medical attention, which included the finger being glued together.

Neel was already facing charges in St. Francois County for two counts of felony possession of a controlled substance and misdemeanor charges of possession of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia and driving while intoxicated.
