ARCADIA — With the new season starting this past Monday, the Valle Warriors are the first to win a conference baseball game in 2009 with a 16-1 walk-over of the Arcadia Valley Tigers on Thursday. The win marked Valle’s second in as many days.
The outcome of the game was settled in the top of the first before the Tigers had a chance to score. Scoring 10 runs in their first at-bats, Valle took command of the game.
Arcadia Valley scored their lone unearned run in the bottom of the second, but could not keep the Warriors from an early five-inning exit with Valle scoring their last four tallies in the top of the fifth.
Luke Uding was the starting pitcher for Valle, throwing only for two innings before Derek Koller took over to claim the win.
Zach Weiler and Nathan Geile had two hits each for the Warriors, and Aaron Basler, Jason Blum, Uding and Christian Moulton had one hit apiece.
Valle (2-0) will play next on Saturday at home to host Helias in a doubleheader. Arcadia Valley (0-1) will travel to Central on Monday.
Fredericktown 11, Woodland 5
FREDERICKTOWN — Senior Jake Sikes struck out nine batters while allowing one hit and no earned runs over five innings, and the Fredericktown baseball team defeated Woodland 11-5 at home on Thursday.
Taylor Sohn had a single and double among five Blackcats with multiple hits, and Jon O’Neal matched Alex Gibbs by finishing 2-for-3 on the day.
A.P. Lewandowski and Sikes each had a pair of singles, and Jacob Farmer contributed a double to the victory. Fredericktown (1-1) tallied four runs in the opening inning, and built a comfortable 8-1 lead through five.
The Blackcats will host Crystal City today in a rescheduled contest.
GOLF
West County 139, Clearwater
TERRE DU LAC — The West County Bulldogs opened their golf season with a diminished-team 139-144 win over the Clearwater Tigers at Terre Du Lac’s Valley Course. The Tigers had only three golfers, so the two teams only counted three scores instead of the normal four.
Tanner McKinney was medalist with a 37, due partly to an eagle on a par four hole. Trevor Morgan had one birdie in his nine-hole round.
TENNIS
St. Pius 7, North County 2
FESTUS — The St. Pius Lancers rebounded from their shut-out defeat on Wednesday to pounce on a very young North County Raiders team on Thursday for a 7-2 win.
After being swept in the doubles matches, the Raiders picked up their two wins in singles play.
Andrew Blunt shut out Peter Henula in No. 1 singles for North County’s first win, and Jimmy Lashley defeated Ryan Hermann 8-4 in No. 3 singles.
St. Pius’ singles wins came at No. 2 with Cooper Bacon beating Zach Perry 8-5, No. 4 with Jon Wilson winning 8-6 over Connor McBride, No. 5 with Philip Canada edging out Tyler Laplant 8-6, and No. 6 Sarah Cook winning 8-2 over first-year recruit Michael Hernandez.
North County will host Crystal City on Wednesday for their next meet.
