PARK HILLS — Three Farmington players scored in double figures Saturday night, and the South girls prevailed 70-53 win over the North in the eighth annual Daily Journal MAAA Senior All-Star Game.
Molly Barnes was named the Most Valuable Player after scoring a game-high 18 points, and put the South ahead 44-42 through three quarters with two free throws moments after her steal and layup tied the game.
Farmington forward Kaitlin Knox compiled 13 points with eight rebounds, and guard Taylor Jensen added 10 points and seven assists as the South converted 19-of-26 free throws on the night.
The North briefly regained the lead following putbacks by Chelsie Kelly of West County and Kassi Hovis of North County, but was outscored 26-11 by the South in the final stanza.
Fredericktown standout Kylie Oertel netted nine of her 13 total points in the fourth quarter, including a three-point play that sparked a decisive 10-1 spurt. The South then closed the contest with nine straight points.
Kelly brought the North within 16-15 by closing the first quarter with a baseline jumper, and paced her squad with 10 points. The second period would be dominated by strong defense.
The North responded from a scoring drought of nearly five minutes with a sudden 7-0 run, and grabbed its initial lead when Ste. Genevieve guard Megan Schenck buried an open three-pointer.
Bismarck guard Holly Blunt countered with two field goals for the South, and a transition layup from Barnes made the halftime score 27-24. Neither team led by more than four points in a third quarter that featured five ties.
Holley Fox tallied a game-high 11 rebounds with eight points, while Ste. Genevieve teammates Tisha Meyer and Schenck added seven points each for the North, which was a collective 9-for-22 from the line.
The South girls claimed their fourth consecutive victory and have won seven of the eight total meetings.
