FARMINGTON — Sixteen track teams made for a full afternoon and a late evening of track events at Farmington’s Simpson Relays. When all was said and done, the Farmington Knights with 111 points and the Knightettes with 101.25 had won their respective sides of the meet.

The Potosi Trojans took second on the boys side with 92 points and Valle came in third with 70. The Ste. Genevieve Hunters claimed second on the girls side with 94.75 points and Pacific came in a distant third at 63.

Potosi had a 6-5 edge in first-place finishes and a 2-1 edge in second place finishes, but the Knights, who had only five firsts and one second place, were able to place more athletes in more events in the eight-place format. Scoring for team points was 10 for 1st, 8 for 2nd, 6 for 3rd, and 5-4-3-2-1- for the next five places.

Farmington won first place in the 4x400 and 4x800 meter relays and the 1600 meter sprint medley. Trent Busenbark placed first in the 300 meter hurdles and Alex Rhodes was first in the 400 meter dash.

For Potosi, Brandon Bourbon won a trifecta with first place in the 100 meter dash, the triple jump and the long jump. Damian Beacham won the 110 meter hurdles, Nick Niggeman placed first in the 1600 meter run, and Jacob Swearingen was first in the 3200.

North County’s relay team won first place in the 4x100 meter relay, and Valle was first in the 4x200. Kevin Leclere rook first in the pole vault for Ste. Genevieve, and Luke Cureton was first in the 800 meter run for Fredericktown.

Both the Knightettes and the Hunters utilized lower finishes to accumulate their massive amount of points. The Knightettes had only one first-place which Molly Barnes claimed with her personal-best in the pole vault at 11 feet. The Hunters had no first-place finishes, but did manage three seconds.

The girls pole vault was a gleaming example of betterment as all three of the top places were a foot or more over each girl’s personal best. Kaitlyn Callahan of Herculaneum took second at 10 feet and Skylar Ragland was third with a vault of nine feet.

 Ste. Genevieve’s Candace Burr won the 100m dash for the Hunters’ lone gold. Sarah White won the  3200m run and Kelsey Hampton won the high jump for Potosi.

Kylie Oertel of Fredericktown claimed two gold medals in the 200m dash and the triple jump, and Mariah Korokis took first in the discus.

Like Bourbon on the boys side, Precious Selmon of Crystal City was the only girl to win three events with first place in both 100 and 300 hurdles and also the long jump.
