ST. LOUIS — The Mineral Area Cardinals played a doubleheader in Sunday’s wind against the Forest Park Highlanders, and the two teams combined for 47 total runs over the two games. MAC won the run-fest in the first game 18-12, and Forest Park was able to somewhat calm things down a bit for a 10-7 final.
Chance Cleveland left the mound in the first game after finishing the top half of the fourth, trailing 8-7, but an eight-run breakout in the bottom of the fourth for the Cardinals offense gave Cleveland the win.
Bobby Tatum hit two home runs and a double to drive in eight of MAC’s runs. Tatum drove in half the Cardinals eight runs in the fourth inning with a grand slam.
Richie Stanley was 4-5 in the game with four singles, and Korey Domenick drove in four runs for the Cardinals with a pair of singles, and Jordan Thompson was 3-5 with one double.
Matt Goldstein was 3-5 with a two-run home run for Forest Park (16-24) and Curran Collins went 4-4 with a solo home run.
The Cardinals (19-27) jumped out to a 5-1 lead in the first three innings and held it until the bottom of the fourth. Golstein ignited the Highlanders with a two-run home run and it led to Forest park scoring three runs in each of the fourth, fifth and sixth innings. MAC could only manage two more runs in the seventh inning,
Starting pitcher Dustin Hunter gave up seven runs in his four and a third innings to suffer the loss.
Stanley hit a two-run home run in the first inning to give MAC the early lead, and he reached first in all three of his at-bats with two walks.
Tyler Beers was 2-4, and Isaac Armstrong went 2-3 with a double, driving in two runs as well.
Mineral Area is scheduled to play at St. Charles on Tuesday for their next games.
HIGH SCHOOL
Notre Dame 5, West County 1
EAST PRAIRIE — It was the battle of the Bulldogs for first place of the Mississippi County Baseball Tournament. Both West County’s and their opponent Cape-Notre Dame’s mascot is the Bulldog, so it was the Bulldogs which ended up as the tournament’s champion, Notre Dame that is by a score of 5-1.
Trevor Kean pitched the entire game for West County (14-3), and he allowed only one earned run on five hits.
West County led 1-0 after the first inning, until the top of he fifth when Notre Dame scored two unearned runs . West County had opportunities to get back into the game such as the sixth inning with men on second and third and only one out, but a fly ball caught by the outfield was relayed in time to cut down the runner at the plate for a double play.
Notre Dame scored their last three in the seventh with only one run earned.
West County will travel to Bunker for an afternoon game today.
