CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. (AP) — Sen. Claire McCaskill says a former federal courthouse in Cape Girardeau is too too big and in the wrong spot to become a homeless shelter.
The Democrat from Missouri wrote to Secretary of Health and Human Services Kathleen Sebelius. She joins two Republicans, Sen. Kit Bond and U.S. Rep. Jo Ann Emerson, who also think the courthouse is not the right setting to create a shelter.
The Rev. Larry Rice operates the New Life Evangelistic Center in St. Louis and another in mid-Missouri. He applied to obtain the former federal building in Cape Girardeau to create a new homeless shelter. He say by law using a surplus federal building as a homeless shelter should have priority over other potential uses.
