U.S. Rep. Jo Ann Emerson noticed a large cube comprised of intersecting plastic strips that created square cells. The plastic cube looked like a gigantic box made to hold canning jars.
Emerson knew immediately what she was looking at Monday during her tour of the Fireside Group business in Park Hills Industrial Park.
“I’ve ridden on top of those,” she said. “They’re removable flood walls.”
Emerson, two members of her staff and local media toured the facility as part of Emerson’s commitment to familiarize herself with businesses in Missouri’s Eighth District. Fireside Group President Tom Kearns and his son Andy, who serves as vice president for SportsPlay Equipment talked with Emerson about Fireside Group’s companies that operates out of the Park Hills facility.
SportsPlay, which has its headquarters in St. Louis, manufactures plastic panels used in playground equipment. Emerson watched as a computer driven machine swept back and forth across a green panel, cutting shapes out of the center. In the next room, two men fitted metal pipes together while a white-clad worker wearing a gas mask, spray painted metal framework that will be used in playground equipment.
The Park Hills facility also houses a plastic gasket manufacturing company, a small manufacturing company that makes paint shakers, and an assembly company that puts together the Geocell Systems’ Rapid Deployment Flood Wall — the product Emerson recognized.
The units can be shipped flat, then pulled open to create the celled containers. Sand or any other material is poured into the cells to create a strong, sturdy unit. The modular units can be erected to create flood walls more than 65 times faster than building sandbag walls. The resulting barriers are stronger than sandbag walls and have less leakage.
Andy Kearns said that after they are used in a flood barrier, the units are returned to Park Hills, where they are cleaned, repaired if needed, and recertified for use.
After the tour, Emerson and the Kearns discussed challenges for businesses.
“Last year, it was prices because the cost of steel skyrocketed,” Tom Kearns said. “This year, it’s the economy. The stock market is up and down.”
Emerson agreed.
“It’s hard to read trends,” she said. “We haven’t done a good job reading trends for quite a while now.”
Emerson also discussed her opposition to the cap-and-trade bill that would cap the amount of carbon U.S. companies can produce. Companies that exceed that cap, could purchase or “trade” carbon allowances or permits to cover the extra emissions. Emerson estimated that the cost of implementing the bill would be prohibitive to companies.
“The equipment to measure emissions could cost a company $30,000,” she said. “If you think it’s bad now, just wait.”

Keep it coming everyone.. maybe we can convert PoliSci to the right....
Funny how everyone realizes the truth once they accept the fact that a website might be lying..
It amazes me that people completly rely on a few sites for information.. yet they are just as misled as the other side..
Someone said it best.. too much us and them... maybe if we quit trying to get this country to provide for everything, get real politicians back in office and move forward, we can reclaim the greatest nation status again...
Until then, we are stuck with career politicians who will never allow a 3rd party to have any chance of getting elected... it would destroy the Rep/Dem career ladder....
illegal immigrants are ILLEGAL, send them home. Gays have just as many rights under the constitution as straight people, they don't need "special rules", and keep govt. out of education and health care.. the private sector does a bad enough job, do you really think the government can fix it? Look at Amtrack...

PoliSci, you have a bad case of Bush Derangement Syndrome, seek help. Bush the older may have tried to get Nafta pushed through, but it was Slick Willy that signed it. His Bill. As for the Tarp, If I remember correctly it was a Dem Controlled house and senate that passed that bill. Lots of Rep's voted against it. The 700 Billion that GWB is credited with is nothing compared to the Trillions that BHO and Dem congress are spending. So How is that Hope and Change working for ya now?

PoliSci is again repeating the talking points of the Huffington Post, Daily Kos, and the other liberal media outlets.
Do not let the truth stand in the way of you arguments.
By the way...better check on your NAFTA info....that agreement was definitely a Bill Clinton agreement...though you are correct...it had bipartisan support.
And I will add.....GW Bush does not get a pass on the socialist takeover...it started with him....Obama is taking it to a whole other level.
When you continue to quote the numbers for people who want this and that from the government...your numbers are high...but you are correct in that too many people want the government to take care of health care, send their kids to college, feed them, and take care of all of their other needs.....but that does not make it the right thing to do.
Obama and his followers are working diligently to get as many illegals and non taxpaying Americans on the "dole" as possible....it will keep them in office while the tax payers and job creators continue getting screwed.

What is your problem with NAFTA or any Free-Trade agreement? Remember, no half-facts or spin...
BassSlayer posted at Tuesday, June 30th, 2009 at 3:31 pm
PoliSci - I agree that something needs to be addressed with respect to healthcare. What I object to is basing any reform on 'talking points', misleading information or contrived 'facts'. This also applies to 'Climate Change' legislation. There is no honest debate where healthcare, climate, card check or any other major legislation is concerned. Congress does not even read the bills before voting on them. As a nation, we have historicaly relied on the reporters to sniff out a story and investigative journalism used to expose government corruption, regardless of party affiliation. There is no such thing as journalism in this country anymore. Corruption in Politics and Business abounds. Our school system fails to teach critical thought and turns out more sheep every year which only perpetuates the problems.
Look around. Our country is in trouble. There is an underlying sense that all is not right with the country. We are not united. There is an 'Us and Them' menality that is corrosive and highly destructive.
Enough of the half-facts and political spin. If you are not part of the solution, then you are a part of the problem....

PoliSci, while Obama is "trying to save jobs" he is funding busines with a failed business model to "keep them afloat" in the name of saving jobs. If they are in such bad shape, let them fail. Why keep them afloat. Of course we're giving more people dissability, more people money to save the homes they never could afford or didn't take the time to read the contract they signed. At the end of the day it is "always someone else's fault and we need tax dollars to save ourselves". One question, I'm a middle clase white hetersexual male who has now paid taxes to help virtually everyone EXCEPT my demographic group. Where is my bailout? I work to keep my home and car and family fed but get nothing. I get a small "tax break" that will not be part of my refund. Your $13.00 a week is a CHANGE IN WITHHOLDINGS, not a TAX BREAK as Obama calls it. Watch your taxes at the end of the year. They will be $400 bucks less on your return. It's just the start.
PoliSci posted at Tuesday, June 30th, 2009 at 10:41 am
I would merely point you to the G.W. Bush's nationalization of Goldman Sachs/AIG/Citigroup/Bank of America and the $700 billion TARP fund. The difference being Obama is trying to save 400,000 middle class jobs, and 'Dubyah' sought to save Wall Street, who were the cause. Some polls show a split, while some show that 62% of Americans are for some form of a single-payer healthcare system. In many nations doctors are not even allowed to make a profit due to the loss of compassion that comes with tending to a business instead of their patients. I believe that goes to far, but a nationalized plan has been a long time coming. The revenue generated/saved from closing tax loopholes used by offshore corporations, digital records, and a tax increase on the upper 2% would be a step in the right direction in funding the plan. Do I believe it will be flawless? No, but the system we have now is a shameless scam of inflated costs and lackadaisical care. Also, it was G.H. Bush who ceremonially signed NAFTA(his plan) with Canadian/Mexican leaders and tried to fast track it but failed. Republicans were the voting majority for it.

It is not even the size business, it is the amount of regulation and control that the government is taking over business and private citizens. The Cap and Trade is reported to have a requirement that if a person wants to sell their home, the government gets to do a Environmental Inspection of it. If and only if it meets the governments aproval will the owner be granted the right to sell the home.
Does it matter if the government owns something if it can dictate why, how, or what is done with a business or a person's private property?

Speaking of 'jobs going to Mexico'...
didn't President Clinton sign that bill.. pretty sure he did:(?)
Does that make him evil. 'NO!'
I didn't agree with that, but I voted for him, and would again if possible.
Please forgive our district's Representive for touring a business in Parkhills. I.E. - her job description-
Next people will say she is the devil reincornated.

PoliSci - At it again I see. Set up a 'straw-man' and hope no one notices. For arguments sake, lets assume you 98% private vs 2% goverment ownership is correct. The number of businesses dose not matter. It is the SIZE of the businesses that really matter. What is the correct percentage based on number of employees or the volumn of sales? this ratio is much higher and much more alarming.
Secondly, your healthcare argument is very weak. we constantly hear about the number of un-insured put at about 47 million. What we do not hear is the ratios of who these people are. How many of the 47 million are illegal aliens? How many can afford it but choose not to? The suspect arguments for government healthcare attempt to pull the wool over the American Peoples collective eyes and you play right into it with claims that the rest of the world provides healthcare to thier people. Well, I believe the elites want the general riff-raff out of the private hospitals so they don't have to be around us normal joes. This arguement makes as much sense as yours.

Lets see, he's been in office just 6 months and already 2% (going off of poliSci's numbers) of business are controled by the government, including GM, who just a few short years ago was the largest company in the US. Wal-Mart better watch out, Im sure they will be coming after you soon. As you lefties say on other things, give him time and that 2% will grow. If he takes over the health care industry, that will push that number up significantly.

Manufacturing jobs = decent income = ability to spend = guaranteed loan payoff = better economy

PoliSci - I need to keep hammering away at your blog of mistruths. To the healthcare issue, yes it is definatly treated as a business and I admit, some changes need to be made. How do you propose we fix it? Find me the trillions that Obama says it will cost to "fix", and show me the plan that isnt even drafted yet to spend these trillions of dollars. While we are at it, let's extend welfare, increase food stamps, pay the poor to not work. Where are these taxes coming from? Oh yea, I remember, the wealthy. Aren't those the same wealthy that like to open businesses, make more money, and as a result they CREATE jobs? Obama is a genious... let's take an economy in the pits and say we're fixing it by taxing those that have some money left. Socialism is knocking on our door. Who will get bailed out next? GE? Walmart? Where does it end?
sfcitizen posted at Friday, June 26th, 2009 at 10:50 am
PoliSci- how do you propose "fixing" the pay ratio? Let see, how about we take the ceo of Wallmart and GE and tell them they can now only legally make 75,000 per year. Guess what.. the corporate office will move overseas, and they will only pay American's minimum wages to run the stores. You think that Gov't simply passes a law and a big business that employs 1000's at decent middle class wages won't move? Why are the call centers for Dell overseas? They can't pay that many people what they want to sit in a chair. To know you computers, you need degrees, which mean people want a respectable salary. Government has no place in any private business. Now, to the note that some car lot took advantage of a few sailors.... it is the person's responsibility who is MAKING THE PURCHASE to ensure it is a fair deal. I have never fell victim to fraud or had a bad deal yet, although I've been offered.

Can anyone here understand that the left and the right are both controlled by the New World Order and the President is nothing but a puppet. His strings are pulled by the same people who want a one world government, one world monetary system, one world court system and a one world religion. They admit that they would like to eliminate 80% of the population and have nothing but a rich class and a poor class, this is happening right now by design. Check out the PNAC (Project for a New American Century) document. It's all spelled out in plain english by the people that have all the real pull in this country.

I will ask again. Short of actual ownership, with the ever-increasing control and administration over business, how is what the government doing NOT socialism?
With the way new laws and regulations control what and how businesses do things, actual ownership is not needed to enforce the socialist will on private business. Does it matter if 98% of business is privately owned, if fear and intimidation of the government determines the decisions made?

98% of all businesses in America are privately owned, and 2% are now government owned or backed. That in no way constitutes socialism. Also, there is no such thing as "Free Trade" or a "Free Market Capitalism/System". More and more nations are taking up protectionist measures to ensure they take care of their own first, and what drove us to this mess was the so-called free trade advocates deregulating Wall Street, Banks, and Financial Institutions. We've got insurance companies in the banking industry, hedgefunds destroying stock in companies(Goldman Sachs) for personal gain, and for no other reason than unmitigated greed. Until this nation gets rid of the 250:1 payscale mentality it will be the middle class that will further rescind into poverty as the top 2% laughs all the way to the bank. Too many people have faith in a "Trickle Down" model, and that the rich, in their benevolence, will create jobs and not continue to dodge their tax obligations via offshore accounts. We treat healthcare like a business, patients like a paycheck, and are one of the only western nations not giving its citizens the healthcare they deserve.

Socialism according to Merriam-Webster
1: any of various economic and political theories advocating collective or governmental ownership and administration of the means of production and distribution of goods
2 a: a system of society or group living in which there is no private property b: a system or condition of society in which the means of production are owned and controlled by the state
3: a stage of society in Marxist theory transitional between capitalism and communism and distinguished by unequal distribution of goods and pay according to work done
So.... short of actual ownership (though with what has happened to the auto industry...), with the ever-increasing control and administration over business, how is what the government doing NOT socialism?

AnAmericanVoice, You don't even know what free trade means. Look it up. And stop drinking the "socialism" koolaid. You guys really need to find a new argument, the "socialism" thing is really dry. None of you have a clue what socialism really is. Try educating yourself instead of just repeating the talking points, because the talking points make no sense. That's the real problem with this country.

The cap and trade is yet another maneuver designed to break the back of America's free market economy. We must stand up as a nation and say NO to this freefall toward a socialist model if we want to save our nation.

Nice to see our Rep getting out and talking to local business. Scary to hear her say If we think it's bad not, to just wait.
Personally, Obamas cap and trade program is a waste of a program designed to do nothing but bring more money into the federal goverment, while honestly doing nothing but killing small business and not helping the environment.
If he really wants to do something, spend more money on windmills and solar panels.
Don't "auction" credits at an expense that gets the company nothing more than permission to operate for the next year.
Use the 30k from the company to buy solar panels, purchase fuel efficient vehicles, turn diesel pickup trucks into vehicles that can run on vegetable oil, etc...
Instead, it's just money in the pockets of our Democratic leaders intent on "socializing" the United States.
