NEW MADRID - The Central Rebels gave notice that they are ready for district play with a 38-28 win over the often-ranked New Madrid County Eagles on Friday. The win bolsters the Rebels record to 6-1.
Despite the very wet conditions, running back Tyler Friend had a huge day running the ball for Central with a total of 347 yards on 31 carries and four touchdowns. New Madrid’s G’Darius Stevenson also had a great day running the ball for over 200 yards and three TD’s.
Central marched down the field on their first possession with Matt Ketterer picking up most of the yardage on a 47-yard run. Ketterer finished the night with 13 carries for 104 yards.
Friend had his first shot at a touchdown on a short run, but the ball was knocked loose at the one. Aaron Tyree fell on the ball in the end zone for the Rebels’ first score. Ryan Calvird passed to Brad Bales for what would be the first of several 2-pt conversions as place-kickers never entered the entire game.
Stevenson tied the game early in quarter two on a 39 yard run, and he also took it in for the two-pointer. On their very next possession, Stevenson broke one for 84 yards to give New Madrid their first and last lead. Kony Ealy ran in the two-pointer.
The Rebels ate up the last six minutes of the half on a drive that ended with Friend taking it in from the one-yard line, and he also converted the tying two-pointer.
Central got a special boost on the opening kickoff of the third quarter. The Rebels were able to recover the ball on a squib kick, and marched it to the five, where they gave it back on a lost fumble.
Stopping the Eagles on three-and-out, the Rebels still gained the advantage of the squib-kick recovery with good field position, and Friend used a large opening in the line by his team’s offensive linemen to break loose for a 36-yard score. Jaron Bridges converted the two-yard run.
Central held again, and this time Friend found daylight for a 62 yard run, and he backed it up with a three-yarder into the end zone to give the Rebels a 30-16 advantage going into the fourth quarter.
New Madrid scored twice in the early going of the fourth quarter to pull to within two points due to their failure to convert both two-point tries.
On Central’s next possession, Friend took off for his longest run of the game, crossing the goal line 87 yards later, and tacking on two to make the final score 38-28.
Stopping New Madrid on downs, Central ate up most all of the remaining time again with their last drive, taking a knee to end the game.
Central heads into Ste. Genevieve on Friday looking for a win, something they have not done against the Dragons since 1986.
Potosi 40, Festus 8
POTOSI - The Potosi Trojans are ranked third in the state in Class 3. The Potosi Trojans won 40-8 on Friday over Class 4 Festus. The Potosi Trojans are now 7-0, and it doesn’t look like the Potosi Trojans are going to stop there.
Running back Brandon Bourbon went over the 1700-yard mark on Friday and upped his touchdown total to 22. He started the game with a 91-yard return of the opening kickoff and the two-point conversion, and from then on it was Potosi’s game.
Getting the ball for their running back, Potosi’s defense smothered the Festus Tigers offense with Robert King making three sacks, and Chad Smith pulling down a Tigers’ pass for the interception.
Tanner Glore, who scored a six-yard touchdown on offense, was also a force on defense with seven solo tackles and six assists. King also had seven solos and Brad Wright and Dylan Wyrick each had six. D.J. Greer made two tackles for losses.
Bourbon’s rushing touchdowns started with an 85 yard run in the second quarter, and he had runs o three and 22 in the third quarter. Glore’s touchdown came with 48 seconds left in the half and Greer scored Potosi’s last TD on a six-yard run late in the game.

Fredericktown 14, Charleston 8
FREDERICKTOWN - A.P. Lewandowski flipped a 5-yard touchdown pass to Ryan Gifford in overtime, and Fredericktown emerged from horrendous field conditions to defeat winless Charleston 14-8 on Friday night.

Fredericktown (4-3) trailed 8-0 deep into the fourth quarter, but finally broke through on a 1-yard dive from fullback Dylan Ellis with 4:49 left in regulation. Farmer tacked on the tying 2-point conversion.
Charleston (0-6), which was forced to cancel its Week 6 contest against Dexter because of a flu outbreak, struck first on a 17-yard scamper from quarterback Deonte Jones following a scoreless first half.
Brylan Moore made an interception to lead the Fredericktown defense.
Westminster 34, Ste. Genevieve 13
STE. GENEVIEVE - Senior Zack Dorton tossed two touchdown passes to Alex Cacciarelli during the first half, and Westminster added to the recent struggles of Ste. Genevieve on Friday night with a dominant 34-13 win.

Westminster (5-2) surged ahead 27-0 when Nathan Smallwood returned a pick 10 yards to the endzone with 3:05 remaining in the half. Ryan Allee then increased the Wildcats’ lead on a 9-yard run in the third quarter.
The Dragons, who will enter district action against Central on a four-game losing skid, broke the shutout bid when senior Tim Lurk scored from 5 yards out. Weiler added the final points on a 38-yard keeper with 3:10 to play.
Lurk paced Ste. Genevieve with 108 rushing yards on 21 carries. Logan Giesler and Nic Wittu combined for the Dragons’ lone sack on defense.
