Implantations of cardiac defibrillators are now possible in the Farmington area according to Bryan Hargis, FACHE, Chief Executive Officer of Mineral Area Regional Medical Center.
On Sept. 21, Dr. Antoine M. Adem Certified Cardiac Device Specialist, performed the first known implantation at the hospital.
An AICD, Automatic Implantable Cardiac Defibrillator is a small, battery powered electrical impulse generator, similar to a pacemaker, which is implanted in patients who have a low EF or ejection fraction (volume of blood pumped out of the heart with each beat), which if low, increases the risk of sudden cardiac death.
AICD's constantly monitor the rate and rhythm of the heart, and delivers therapy by means of an electrical shock. They are able to determine the heart's activity, and either break the tachycardia, shock out of a deadly rhythm, or act as a pacemaker if the rate falls too low. An AICD is also used in some patients to treat Congestive Heart Failure by means of bi-ventricular pacing to increase the strength of contractions, and re-synchronize the contractions, therefore increasing the EF.
