Plaza Tire Service opened 46 years ago as a family-owned and customer service focused car wash named Plaza Car Wash. Although the company's name has changed to Plaza Tire Service and its focus is now to provide tires and automotive services, Plaza Tire Service still remains family-owned and customer service driven.

Throughout June, Plaza Tire Service celebrated its 46th anniversary with a special Instant Rebate offer up to $40 when purchasing select sets of four new tires through June 30 and a look back at its humble beginnings.

Vernon "Pee Wee" Rhodes established Plaza Tire Service in 1963 as Plaza Car Wash. Plaza Car Wash provided hand-operated car wash services on William Street in Cape Girardeau. By 1967, the company added retread and new tire sales to its product offering. The business continued to grow and soon the company had three route trucks running, a car wash operating in full-swing, and the retreading shop worked through the night.

Eventually, the company began selling and changing tires along the sidewalk outside the carwash. Local regulations ended this practice, and the company chose to exclusively provide tire and automotive services from that point on. On Labor Day in 1968, the car wash was renovated over one weekend, without losing a single day's work. Plaza Car Wash was then renamed Plaza Tire Service.

Through the 1970's, Plaza Tire Service established operations in Columbia, Springfield, and Springfield, Ill., which primarily consisted of wholesale activities. When fuel prices escalated in 1980, the company realized the need for retail service centers. Since that time, Plaza Tire Service, Inc. has expanded with an aggressive pace and now has over 50 full-service retail stores located in Southeast Missouri, Southern Illinois, Western Kentucky and Northeast Arkansas.

Plaza Tire Service was recently listed as the 26th largest independently owned tire retailer in North America by Tire Business magazine. Its newest store opened December 2008 in Chesterfield. Despite the company's rapid growth, it remains owned by a second generation of the Rhodes family and is still headquartered in Cape Girardeau.

Its flagship store continues to operate at its original site located at 2149 William Street in Cape Girardeau along with two other stores in Plaza Tire Service's hometown at 433 Siemers Dr. and 1634 N. Kingshighway.

All of Plaza Tire Service's 50 stores carry reputable brands including Bridgestone, Yokohama, Firestone, Dayton, Michelin, Continental, Pirelli. Toyo and Dick Cepek off-road tires along with Ultra and Enkei custom wheels. All Plaza Tire Service stores also employ skilled technicians that provide brake, battery, shock, strut, oil change, state inspection, tire rotation and balance and wheel alignment services six days a week, Monday through Saturday. Plaza Tire Service stores do not require appointments, but they are accepted upon customer request.
