Blackcats pound Central defense for district win

PARK HILLS — Limited mistakes and balanced offensive execution propelled the Fredericktown football team into the Class 3 playoff hunt, and spoiled an anticipated celebration in Park Hills on Friday night.

Junior quarterback A.P. Lewandowski scored four rushing touchdowns while passing for another, and the Blackcats shredded the Central defense for a season-high 541 total yards in a convincing 55-28 road victory.

Jacob Farmer totaled 195 yards on 20 carries with two touchdowns, including a 36-yard burst that opened the scoring, as Fredericktown (5-4) collected its fifth win in six games.

Lewandowski was an effective dual-threat with 112 yards on the ground while finishing 7-for-10 passing for 141 yards. The Blackcats also converted several pivotal third-down plays throughout the contest.

Central (7-2) hoped to clinch its first postseason berth since 1976 after defeating Ste. Genevieve last week, but now must defeat top-ranked Potosi on Thursday to maintain even the slightest chance of extending its season.

The Rebels achieved its offensive success exclusively by running the ball. Junior Matt Ketterer compiled 217 yards and two scores on 23 carries, and his elusive 39-yard scamper in the third quarter brought Central within 28-14.

Tyler Friend also logged 23 attempts for 147 yards, and his two-point conversion gave the Rebels their lone advantage of 8-7 after Jaron Bridges punched in an early 3-yard touchdown run.

Fredericktown quickly answered with a scoring drive that originated from its own 13. Lewandowski found open space on a fourth-and-7 scramble, and continued 39 yards to the endzone to regain the lead.

Central failed to cover the ensuing bouncing kickoff, and the Blackcats needed just three plays to capitalize. Lewandowski connected with Ryan Gifford on a 20-yard strike before stretching the football across the goal line on the next play.

The Rebels saw their next possession stall inside the red zone following a costly holding penalty, and Lewandowski tossed a 7-yard pass to Jon O’Neal on fourth-and-goal to make it 28-8 with 42 seconds remaining in the half.

Central had momentum midway through the third quarter after Ketterer had scored, but could not prevent the Blackcats from moving the chains on third-and-18, when Lewandowski again found O’Neal open on a rollout.

Fredericktown matched prolonged drives by Central with explosive rushing plays during the second half. Ketterer cut the margin to 35-20 with a 3-yard run after the teams traded fumbles on back-to-back snaps.

But Farmer followed a downfield block from Wacey Walters and went the distance from 65 yards out, stealing any possibility for a late comeback away from the Rebels.

Lewandowski went 43 yards on another scoring scramble with 10:01 left for a 49-28 spread, and Coley Gray broke through a facemask grab on a 57-yard burst to cap the scoring.

Linebacker Justin Menteer recorded a team-high 13 tackles while battling a nagging shoulder injury, and Brylan Moore added 12 for Fredericktown, which will host Ste. Genevieve on Thursday.

Rebel88,

How well do you know all the coaches (every coach on Central's staff) who you have elected to anonymously criticize on this public blog? This doesn't help the football program one bit. If you feel so strongly about Coach Schweiss or other coaches (and you did classify every one of them as being deficient), why don't you personally tell each one how you feel about the job they do?

Do you know me? Obviously not because I am not biased, a parent or blind!

We had a great season this year true enough but if you watched the same head coach as I did this year you would know that he isn't the best for our Central Rebels. Maybe you are one of those fans that only attend home games and truly don't know what you are talking about?

After the St Gen game he sent the boys home from practice early everyday before the Fredericktown and Potosi gamses and said "I don't care what you do, do whatever you want" the day before the Potosi games to the boys, that doesn't sound like a coach that wants to win and go furhter to me. I would like to see what Coach Jones could do with this team and I don't even know him personally, that is listening to the players I know and how they feel about him as a coach.

But, that could all just be my biased, blind parental remarks!

I personally can't wait until 2010 Central Rebels Football!

Central has a great football coaching staff at all levels. Congratulations on a great season. My advice to everyone is to ignore Rebel88's obvious biased, parent/blind remarks.

Maybe some parents on this board are getting a dose of reality...

I never said the Rebels didn't have a successful season, they had a terrific season! If you will look back through the posts, I was just agreeing with an earlier post by avidfan regarding the state championship. Please don't put words in my mouth.

FOOTBALLFAN
Everyones goal would be to win a championshipbut the reality is that only one team can win. Wanting to win a state title is not a bad thing, it is only a bad thing when one makes that the sole factor in determining a successful season.
j_lew_33 posted at Tuesday, November 3rd, 2009 at 4:35 pm

we have won no state championships but we do have a few district championships in a few sports. and yes that is every teams ultimate goal. but sometimes you have to know what your limitations are and set goals just beyond that to start off with. you cant learn to run without standing first. what i was getting at is that park hills can't even be satisfied with a winning season. they must think if they dont win the state championship it's a failure and blame everyone in the system for it. having a winning tradition or winning state championships has nothing to do with who a coach knows or is related to, it has to do with his/her coaching skills and most of all the talent to work with. you cant win championships without talent. im not saying park hills isnt talented. they have a VERY good football program, and believe it or not, schweiss has it headed in the right direction.

Way to go Rebels!! What a great year you all had!! Couldn't be more proud of all of you! Good luck to all of the Seniors as you go on to hopefully a successful and prosperous future! You will always have this year to look back on and be proud of. Your friend and fan, Tom PS. Tyler and Jordan...youdaman!!! :)

Isn't it the ultimate goal for any school to win the state championship?? You sound as if that is a bad thing. How many state championships has Fredericktown won using the "buddy" system?
j_lew_33 posted at Monday, November 2nd, 2009 at 4:30 pm

are you all that nieve? almost every school in southeast missouri hires on the "buddy system" fredericktown has hired many people within the system. hasnt seemed to affect us much as it has PH apparently. you had a great year. why can't you accept that? seems like u wont be happy until central brings home a state championship.....
FOOTBALLFAN posted at Monday, November 2nd, 2009 at 1:03 pm

MAW - Now we see what you really want to complain about. Just because some kids are too lazy or just not dedicated enough to work hard and earn the right to play, lets blame the "school employees" kids or the "business owners" kids! I really don't agree that that is the problem at all...and I think you might need to re-think who is to blame for that.
maw posted at Monday, November 2nd, 2009 at 8:18 am

So there are others in agreement that as long as Central keeps playing kids/coaching by the buddy system they will not win a state championship.
I also think the belief that school employees kids and business owners kids are better than any of the other kids is part of the problem as well.
FOOTBALLFAN posted at Saturday, October 31st, 2009 at 4:00 pm

Well said avidfan, I agree 100%.
avidfan posted at Saturday, October 31st, 2009 at 1:50 am

Central will never have a state champion in any sport as long as the leadership continues to hire on the buddy system. We have had wonderful athletes come and go, boy and girl with lil to show for it. My congats to the kids for wonderful effort.
j_lew_33 posted at Thursday, October 29th, 2009 at 12:54 pm

take the loss like a WOMAN then... if it was coaching error it wouldn't have been such a lopsided win. fredericktown MIGHT not be the better team. but they were friday night. do u not think that central let their heads get a little big? i have know students from central that were talking smack all week. all i have to say is if you beat potosi tonight, then you can say park hills is the best team. cause then you will be the champs.

One momma mad at the coaches does not make what she is doing and saying right now does it? When the season started, most thought that a 500 season was a reasonable goal. Look at what the coaches have accomplished this season with a secondary that just isn't talented! If a running back gets past our line, we are in trouble. That is just a weakness that other teams can exploit. Same goes for a good passing team. We are going to struggle against them. If you all can do better, get off your behinds and get a college teaching degree and go for it! Gee whiz Rebel fan, we are having a great year!! Enjoy it and quit your complaining. The kids read this stuff!

fredman

My arguement isn't with you, it is with our own coach. Your right that A.P. is something to see and will even be better next year.
My issue is with our coaching staff, already looking forward to the Potosi gams as if that one wasn't as important. You have to work week to week and we stumbled on that and got our behinds handed to us embarassingly.

My issues have been all season with the coaching staff. I think all the kids played well, yours was coached better and got the win. Not taking anything away from either sides players.
fredman posted at Wednesday, October 28th, 2009 at 12:42 pm

rebel88, On this night our team was better, hence we got the win! Not sayng Central played bad, but Fredericktown came in with a better game plan. Maybe Central looked at rhe record and thought it was going to be a cake walk! You all had no answer for A.P.! Just don't like it when the kids play their hearts out and when they win people want to say it was because of the refs or the other team's coach! In some cases it might be true but NOT this time. We were better, we won in convincing fashion, what more proof do you need?
rebel88 posted at Tuesday, October 27th, 2009 at 3:08 pm

Fredman

I understand your comments but I do not agree with the statement that your players are better than ours, but your a fredericktown fan and I am a Central fan we will never agree on that.

j_lew_33

We did not lose to a better team and I won't ever say we did.

I love Tyler and he is a good football player but he isn't doing it all by himself and that is an unfair statement to the other players. Matt Ketterer has done his share of scoring, what about all the wholes Kris Pyatt opened up for Tyler to run through and that is just a couple boys on offense. Have you been watching Jordan Pace, he is tearing it up on both sides of the ball just like Tyler, Lonnie, Kris, Matt etc. I have a favorite on the team to but I know it takes the whole group working as a team to get it done.

Bottom line I can't take it like a man, because I AM A WOMAN!
rebel88 posted at Tuesday, October 27th, 2009 at 2:57 pm

I knew I would spark a debate.

To rebelheir it is great that is your opinion and it is wonderful that you personally had that experience, but I wonder what the opinion of the current players still on the team is?

As for why do people still come watch the games? Well maybe you aren't old enough to get it yet, but some of us are fans of the Central Rebels win or lose and some of us have kids, nephews, grandkids etc that play on the team. I personally haven't missed a game in years, home or away!

As for the running versus passing game, that depends on the quarterback skill. Ryan is a good quarterback and could have a passing game if they would give him a chance to develope timing with the team.

You will never hear me criticize the players for a coaches errors. I am a true blue RED, WHITE & BLUE CENTRAL REBELS fan and that is of the athletes and the school. I hate to see the boys work so hard and the coach not.

Still my opinion, you don't have to share it.
j_lew_33 posted at Monday, October 26th, 2009 at 11:40 am

don't blame the coach for a loss. when tyler friend is doing all the work the whole season he's bound to get stopped if someone can't step up and make up for it if he gets stopped. kory is a very predictable coach. always has been. but that didnt stop them from beating fredericktown in '07 and coming from behind last year to make it close. a great team can be predictable and still find a way to win. the last 2 years everyone knew what fredericktown was going to run and we still ran all over them. rebel88, take the loss like a man. you lost to a better team. get over it.
maw posted at Monday, October 26th, 2009 at 10:09 am

I agree there needs to be a change of some sort at Central, especially at the middle school level. How many other middle school programs are just for fun and not wanting to be competivive?
Middle school helps build your program for the future and if you start losing kids there it's hard to get them back. And there are at least 7 middle schoolers that said they don't want to play football next year. That's not good.
No denying our boys played hard Friday but lets face it they were already looking past Fredericktown to the Potosi game.
fredman posted at Saturday, October 24th, 2009 at 11:11 pm

Face it Central dudes! You all got your tails whooped by the Cats! Fredericktown was the better team and the score proves that! Stop blaming the coaches, our players were better than yours, end of story! Go Blackcats!
rebelheir posted at Saturday, October 24th, 2009 at 2:23 pm

First off, rebel88 every coach on there has played football, and one has went to college and had an awesome career. Second, Central has always ran the ball and everyone knows that, it is just what they do, they do not have a passing game. Third, our defense is coached by one of the best coaches in this county!! If we need a new coaching stafff, then why has this staff led us to great records the past three years? If we need such a great new coaching staff, then why do so many people still come out and watch the games? I have played on that team for four years and graduated last year, and I know about having a bad night when things don't go your way. So instead of criticizing the coaches and players, why don't we say things like you had a great game, and you'll get the next one!
REBEL88 posted at Saturday, October 24th, 2009 at 9:28 am

This is another humiliating example of getting outcoached by the opposing coach. Learn to adjust your game coach on both sides of the ball! Your predictable. On offense you have the same plays and formations with the same kids handling the ball on steady rotation with very little deviation. On defense you have the speed to play man to man, but you won't adjust your defensive game to offset what the other team is doing. Even our wins this season has seen us getting outcoached during the games at times.

In my opinion, which doesn't count for much, it is time for a change in the Coaching staff at Central. Our kids work hard and it's time that Central hires a FOOTBALL coach to coach the team and invest in building a program and that start at the middle school level. Let's hire coaches that are also good teachers not hire teachers that end up coaching a sport that they never even played and know little or nothing about it.

I am sure I am going to start a huge debate, so let's hear it.
