Wearing Santa hats, Donna Hickman, left, and Bonnie Bockenkamp show their Christmas spirit as they ring bells every time they schedule someone else to ring bells at Wishing Wells for the United Way of St. Francois County. The frost may be barely on the pumpkins and the goblins have just made their Halloween rounds, but the United Way of St. Francois County is already scheduling bell-ringers for the Christmas season. The fun begins on Nov. 27, the day after Thanksgiving, at 5 a.m. in Farmington and at 9 a.m. in Park Hills at Wishing Well stations at local stores.

“We have some people who love to get out there with the early shoppers and ring,” said Bonnie Bockenkamp, coordinator of the Bell-ringing program. “It’s never dull ringing at Walmart and JC Penney’s just as the Christmas shopping season begins.”

In Park Hills, ringing will begin at 9 a.m. at Country Mart and continue on Saturdays and Sundays until Dec. 20. In Farmington, ringers are needed at two doors daily at Country Mart from 9 a.m. until 9 p.m. and at JC Penney’s from 9 a.m. until 7 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays.

United Way Board President Mary Lee Faircloth is coordinating the ringing schedule in Park Hills. Rocky Good has organized a number of Farmington churches to ring and this year, new Executive Director Donna Hickman is manning “Bell-Ringing Central” in the United Way’s office at 739 E. Karsch, inside the L.I.F.E. Center.

“People interested in ringing the bell either in Farmington or in Park Hills need to call me at 573-760-8929 or send me an e-mail at donna@unitedwayofsfc.org,” said Hickman. “Individuals, families, co-workers, organizations and groups of friends can ring for an hour or more. In addition,  I’d love to have some musicians who might play and sing a Christmas song or two as they man the Wishing Wells.”

Beginning in 1988 in Farmington, bell ringers have helped to raise money to support agencies that meet basic needs for people in St. Francois County. The Salvation Army first approached community leaders in Farmington to ring to benefit the Farmington Ministerial Alliance and St. Vincent de Paul food pantries. A few years later, under the name of the Farmington United Fund, Inc., the program expanded and continued to include more agencies once the Farmington United Fund became the United Way of St. Francois County. Now, the money raised through bell-ringing will go to the 25 agencies to which the United Way has pledged to give $135,000 in grants in 2010. One of those agencies is the Salvation Army, which gives the money back to St. Francois County to help people with utility bills and other needs.

Collecting donations at the Wishing Wells is just one way to donate to the United Way of St. Francois County. Diners donate every Thursday through Nov. 19 when they eat a meal at a restaurant that has pledged to give a portion of its receipts for the day to the United Way. On this Thursday, it’s Long John Silver’s/A and W. On Nov. 12, Pasta House is the Dine Out restaurant and on Nov. 19, dine at Huddle House in Bonne Terre, Farmington and Leadington and a portion of the bill goes to the United Way of St. Francois County.

“It all adds up,” said Faircloth. “Donors can also give online through Pay Pal or credit card at our Web site: www.unitedwayofsfc.org . We appreciate every donation because it all goes to help people in need right here at home.”

One-hundred percent of every donation received from individuals goes to the agencies the United Way has pledged to support. Administrative costs are paid through the generosity of special corporate donors. The United Way estimates one in four people in St. Francois County benefits from a service provided by one of the agencies it funds. In addition to the Salvation Army, in 2010, those agencies will include the county’s four senior centers; Caring Communities in Central, West and North counties; the Bonne Terre and Farmington Ministerial Alliances; St. Vincent De Paul Food Pantries in Desloge and Farmington; the Bismarck Church of God Food Pantry; Elvins Food Pantry; Parkland Pregnancy Resource Center; Helping Hands of Southeast Missouri Mental Health Center; St. Francois County Children’s Dental Health Clinic; St. Francois County Community Partnership; SEMO Family Violence Council; L.I.F.E Center for Independent Living; Parkland Foster Adopt Families; Farmington Meals on Wheels for Special Diets; Habitat for Humanity of St. Francois County; East Missouri Action Agency Back to School Program and Young Faith in Christ.

Professor we as Christians do not celebrate Christ's birthday on December 25, but we celebrate His birth. The fact he came so we may be saved. It is true his birthdate was likely April, September or October, but once again we aren't celebrating his exact birthdate, but the fact He came so we may have life and have it more abundantly. You are right though, when you tell many Christians that Jesus wasn't born on December 25, many will argue with you. Just like most other areas of interest, we as Christians are not as educated as we should be in our interest field.

I will be one of those bell-ringers you apparently despise so much. And, I'm very happy to be able to do it.
Perhaps, since you are a historian, you could take a little of your time and research the United Way and see what good this organization has done to help so many. They are there to help all year long, not just at Christmas.
Merry Christmas to you and may all the gifts you recieve be in the form of blessings.

To PolySci:

This post reminds me of the time I told my mother that Jesus was likely born in October and we were celebrating a little late.

Being a historian, you know that Richard Halkyut said "God is English" in the 16th century. We know that this conflation of nationalism and faith has rendered some interesting results. Max Weber explored them when he talked about capitalism and the protestant work ethic. It should be no surprise that capitalism and faith have come together to produce the biggest consumer holiday in the history of the world. (Halloween is second).

I can appreciate you bringing this to our attention. However, these charitable organizations do some good work. I wish that folks thought about the poor year round, but I am sure that they will take what they can get and if folks are more willing to give alms when they are thinking about Tiny Tim, please let them.

With all of the suffering in the world, we have bigger fish to fry than Christianity right now. Fry those fish. I know you can.

PoliSci it is very true that the date for Christmas as well as the celebrations seen today have come out of many pegan holidays of that same time. The Bible tells us we can celebrate days if they suit us and they are not hurting others. We as Christians should be celebrating the birth of Christ not his birthday as the exact date is not known, but his birth which is the beginning of salvation for all who believe. Yes this time of pegan celebration was picked to celebrate Jesus' birth, but tell me this, what pegan holidays did Christmas join in with?? I can tell you now, almost 100% of people in the world can tell you about Christmas being associated with Christ, but a very small portion can tell you what those pegan holidays are today! Yes, Christmas has pagan origins. Yes, it is a highly commercial time. Yes, many do not have their eyes on Jesus. But for the Christian it is a time to reflect upon the birth of our Lord and to celebrate. We are making the day holy.

Whatever helps you justify your lack of caring Mr Scrooge I mean Poli Sci. You dont seem to note though that most of these are YEAR round projects that are just highlighted during the holidays. "Giving" is one of the fruits of the Holy Spirit and those who have it do all this without a thought to recognition. The joy of giving can be indesribable and those who feel it are not influenced by the likes of you.

To the Censors and Management of the Daily Journal;

I'd like to request that "PoliSci's"
comments to this story be removed for this Blog, as an example of 'Hate Speech' - a blind insult and clearly hateful disdain of a group based on their religious preference, or race or orientation.

The DJ would never have allowed such a statement if it were about Jews, or Blacks, or any other religious or ethnic group.

His comments are forgivable, not not tolerable.

Please remove them immediately.

Polisci,

I'm impressed.
In less than 200 words, you successfully managed to insult the core spiritual values of the vast majority of Americans,

-prove that your 'education' didn't actually provide you with any intelligence, just some facts ( or factoids)

- Quoting you; "Christians will do anything to exploit and usurp money to fill the coffers which makes it the biggest scam on the face of this planet."
proves to me ( and most others)that your pointless attack on the values of others only displays your complete lack of values - one doesn't need a Bible, or Qu'ran, or Talmud or Tao to have respect for his fellow man;
-Just respect for himself.

- You managed to complete your dim-witted rant without ever once mentioning that the 'Bell-Ringing ' Theme of this story isn't done by any particular group, or to benefit any particular group

- except Humanity.

I pity you, the loss of yours, to live as you do in a hopeless vaccuum.

Oh my, PoliSci, you do love to stir the pot, don't you? Are you familiar with the expression "Never try to teach a pig to sing?"

It's nice to see so many Christian organizations embracing the Paganistic symbolism of the Happy Holidays, and also accepting the traditions that originiate from such historical cultures of which they've no clue. The traditions of giving food, presents, decorated trees, Father Ice/King Winter was later changed to Father Christmas and was from Lapland, Finland or as Odin who was noted for coming down hearths, Yuletide or Yulekatid who left money for the poor, Mistletoe, Holly, sleighs, fruit cakes, reindeer, stockings hung on the mantle, and pretty much everything else representing the Winter Solstice and not the Christian faith. Of course Christians will do anything to exploit and usurp money to fill the coffers which makes it the biggest scam on the face of this planet. It's amazing how many of faith don't even know the history behind their plagiarized ramblings or holidays. As a Historian it's disturbing how those, by recent polls, average a 10th grade education and still don't know that. One need look no further than the Catholic Church, the largest corporation on the face of the planet that protects child molesters, rapists, ushered Nazi's out of Europe, and set the measure for Christianity.
